Engineer Luigi Bezzera in 1901 invented the first espresso machine. It was completely mechanical and, accordingly, it was operated manually. This device was like a huge boiler with boiling water. Bezzer's innovation was a holder into which the barista, manually opening the valve, gradually poured water.
