Working with a "decent" digital agency could be harming your business.
I know how ridiculous that sounds. But hear me out.
Imagine your office is 2 miles away.
You walk every day. It takes 40 minutes.
You're kind of okay with that. 40 minutes isn't great, but it's not terrible either.
Then you move to a new office that's 4 miles away.
You try walking. It takes well over an hour.
Now it's causing problems. You're rushing in the morning.
Losing sleep because you need to get up earlier. Maybe it's affecting your kids.
Getting them up, changed, and out the door sooner.
Your situation has gotten worse.
So you take action.
You buy a bike.
Now it takes 20 minutes to get to work.
Even faster than when your office was half the distance away.
You have more time in the morning.
Time to eat breakfast.
Time with the kids before school.
Here's the thing: when you were walking, you were stuck in a place that was tolerable.
But not painful enough to change.
This is the region-beta paradox, a phenomenon described by psychologist Daniel Gilbert.
Businesses working with terrible agencies tend to leave and find something better.
Businesses working with "decent" agencies stagnate.
Businesses working with great agencies grow, hit their goals, and compound.
Getting stuck with an agency that is a bit "meh" can lead to worse outcomes compared to if they were terrible.
This is because you may not have the same drive to change compared to if their agency were really bad.
The region-beta paradox explains why "good enough" can be more dangerous than bad.
It means you're stuck in the same position for a long time...
Affordable Golf was stuck here.
Around £2M in online revenue.
Previous agency keeping things ticking over.
Not terrible. Just... fine.
They came to ClickBoost.
We took them from £2M to their £10M target.
Then £20M.
This year, we're on track for £30M.
If your current agency feels "fine" but you have bigger ambitions. that's a signal.
