Photo shoots - never as glam as you think. Yes I am stood behind a big pile of dirty tissues used to wipe things down and I have five layers on because it’s freezing. I’m also hiding out of shot between some stone slabs. Seriously enjoying it though and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Not sure when I started enjoying factories and production lines so much. Was it those videos of lemonade bottling / car production lines / automated factories played on the TV in the early 80s to classical music? All I know is I find it fascinating and there is so much to see and then talk about in their comms.

I’m so lucky to have the incredible manufacturing clients I work with 😎

A lot of my week is spent thinking. As a fractional head of comms, I’m often pulled into a business at a moment of change or strategy. This means that some days, I don’t spend a lot of time on my laptop and it sits tucked into its protective case whilst I think.

This plays to my strengths: once I’ve written something down, I never forget it. Writing and even drawing my ideas and thoughts taps into my creative skills and helps me achieve a deep focus on an issue or task.

It’s Friday afternoon and I’m still working through a brand tone of voice and strategy. I’m in the flow so I will keep going for a short while longer at the kitchen table fuelled by snacks and coffee. Once dinner is ready I will stop.

How do you focus? Do you prefer to write or draw on paper when thinking or planning? Or use software on a device?

Wishing you all a great weekend.

How was your Christmas break? Mine was a longer one this year and it was much needed. It has been good to switch off and I come back with a major buzz and ready for 2026 having had time to reflect, relax and recharge.

My most productive and creative days start with a run, shower and coffee after the school drop. All my nervous energy has been used up and I can focus wholly on the task in front of me. What helps you focus?

Today’s run was more of a jog / walk due to the furrows in the fields being frozen solid and the roads being icy. I expect it will be cold in my garden office but I am actually excited about getting back to work. A day of planning and accounts today before client work tomorrow morning.

All the best for your return to work in 2026.

On my way to London for the day to see clients and a few contacts. Catching up on whilst on the train. The Nov issue is full of interesting interviews, opinion pieces and this good news article is jam packed with great thoughts from people all across the KBB industry. What a good read!

COAT Paints have just put me in my place with my email signature at Not sure I can sign off with “Kind Regards” ever again.

Some superb copywriting on the stand at the show. The phrase “Deliberate but never brash” stood out for me as a perfect piece of positioning.

I’m at Decorex networking on behalf of clients, and meeting people and brands. I’m also sharing my post-show planner on how to maximise the investment your business has made in an exhibition. Those first few days and weeks are critical for your lead follow-up. If you want the planner too, comment Planner and I will send it to you via DM.

Made a few calls from the car this morning, read and responded to emails, and went for a swim in the sea. Heading back to my desk shortly to finish uploading some copywriting and set out a structure for three new blogs for a client.

Last month was absolutely full on and though I am still catching up on client work, June is much better. I can manage to get slots like this to get out of my office, road and village to stretch and breathe. So important.

Don’t look now but yes I’m working on my business rather than in it. Have you ever seen anyone look so happy when doing their own strategy? 🤣 Strategy is where I excel and I am thoroughly enjoying the time I have set aside to review and recalibrate my own business strategy today.

Need someone to help you work on the communications strategy for your business rather than you wading in it or worrying about it? Then get in touch. All my contact details are in my bio.

Note taking is a visual thing for me. Drawing my notes or ideas out helps me remember them easier and better. It can also slow down all my thoughts and help them coalesce into useful plan and actions. How do you take notes?

Had a great business planning session today with and Followed by client calls. A day of writing tomorrow for clients, event planning and social content planning. Behind it all though my mind will be bubbling from all the planning I did today and the ideas it gave me for client work too.

I scribbled this down when it was said on a phone call recently. Finding the story that runs through a business is the best bit of my job.

To find the story, I ask a lot of questions, spend time listening and watching to understand everything fully, and I follow this up with research around audience, competitor set and market. If there is a factory tour involved, I am in heaven! 🤓

Sometimes the story and tone of voice requires a bit of bravery for a brand to adopt, but it is always their story, their DNA, their thread. I just help them see it.

The client that said this on the call is an agency head I’ve worked with on many different communications projects, each time adapting and shifting to find and shine a light on the unique brand stories that will attract their target audiences.

If you want to work with a senior communications consultant that looks, listens and absorbs everything about your brand, and blends in perfectly with your team, get in touch.
