NEW CHAPTER FOR LOO OF THE YEAR AWARDS!;
Today, 1 October 2026, we are absolutely delighted to welcome Gareth David to the Loo of the Year Awards team as our new Business Development amp; Growth Lead!
Gareth brings with him a wealth of experience, knowledge and understanding of the cleaning, hygiene and facilities management industry, along with a fantastic network and a genuine passion for the industry we are proud to be part of.
As we head towards an incredibly exciting milestone, the 40th year of the Loo of the Year Awards in 2027, the timing could not be better.
Our ambition has always been bigger than simply presenting awards. We want to continue developing LOTYA as the UK’s leading independent washroom standards scheme, helping organisations understand, measure and improve their away-from-home washrooms, while raising awareness of the importance of cleanliness, accessibility, dignity and good standards for everyone.
Gareth’s industry knowledge and experience will be hugely valuable as we develop new relationships, strengthen existing ones and explore new opportunities for LOTYA to grow and make an even greater impact across the UK and Ireland.
There is a lot happening behind the scenes as we prepare for our 40th year and Gareth is joining us at exactly the right time.We are incredibly excited about what the future holds and cannot wait to see what we can achieve together.Welcome to the team, Gareth! πŸ‘

πŸŽ™οΈπŸš½ Can a smell really change the way you feel about a washroom?
The answer is yes and our latest episode of The Bog Cast explores exactly why. Becky is joined by Mark Wintle, Brand Manager at P-Wave, for a fascinating conversation about the power of fragrance, washroom standards, health, sustainability, education and the future of our industry.
🌿 Why is mango P-Waves most popular fragrance?
🍎 Why does Spiced Apple become a Christmas favourite?
🏨 How can scent become part of a brand experience?
🚻 Why are washrooms often the first and last places people visit?
❀️ How are urinal mats helping raise awareness of bladder cancer?
🌱 What challenges does sustainability bring to washroom products?
🏫 And what are Becky and Mark doing together at Madley Primary School?
Mark also shares why he believes fragrance has its limits, why education is so important, and why the partnership between P-Wave and Loo of the Year Awards is such a natural fit.
There is plenty to think about, plenty to learn and, of course, plenty of talk about toilets!

Two radio interviews in two days… and both talking about something I absolutely love, toilets! 🚽
Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining Jason Mohammad on BBC Wales to talk about why toilets matter so much, and why clean, safe, accessible and well-maintained away-from-home washrooms are far more important than many people realise.
It was my second BBC interview in two days, following Tuesday’s interview with our local BBC station.
I genuinely love talking toilets; because behind every toilet is a conversation about dignity, accessibility, health, inclusion and people being able to go about their day with confidence.
Thank you to both BBC teams for giving me the opportunity to talk about something I am so passionate about, toilets and Loo of the Year Awards πŸ’™πŸš½

What an exciting announcement! πŸ’œ

We are absolutely delighted and incredibly proud to be named as a finalist in the Best Initiative Raising the Profile of the Cleaning Sector category at the European Cleaning & Hygiene Awards 2026.

For us, raising the profile of our industry is about so much more than celebrating clean washrooms. It is about recognising the people behind them, highlighting the professionalism and expertise within our industry, sharing good practice and helping people understand just how important the cleaning and facilities management sectors are to everyday life.

To be shortlisted alongside such fantastic organisations is a real honour. We are very proud of what the Loo of the Year Awards team continues to achieve and of the part we play in helping to shine a light on an industry that deserves to be recognised.

Thank you to the European Cleaning Journal and CBAi Training and Consultancy for this wonderful recognition. We are looking forward to Palma! πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ

πŸ’š A weekend celebrating another of my passions – Young Farmers! πŸ’š
Young Farmers has been a huge part of my life. Having been a member myself and held a number of positions at club level, as well as serving as Herefordshire County Chairman, I have never really left the organisation behind!
For many years I have been a Trustee, Vice-President and Treasurer of Allensmore Young Farmers, as well as a County Vice-President, Trustee and Vice-Chairman of the Management Committee for Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs. Charles is also a Vice-President and Advisory Committee member for Allensmore and a Vice-President of the County Federation.
So, this weekend was a particularly special one.
Friday evening was the County Chairman's Ball, which Charles and I had the great pleasure of attending. It was lovely to spend time with members, both young and old, and catch up with so many familiar faces.
A huge thank you to Kate Lawrence, our County Chair, and her family for organising and hosting such a lovely evening. It was a wonderful way to celebrate Young Farmers and the people who make it such a special organisation.
Saturday morning saw us back in practical mode, servicing the toilets from the Ball and helping to clear everything away ready for the County Ploughing Match!
And what a fantastic day Sunday was. 🚜🌻
The County Ploughing Match is about so much more than ploughing. Members competed in everything from flower arranging, cooking, preserves, woodwork, farm produce displays, photography and sewing, through to the ploughing competitions.
That is one of the things I love most about Young Farmers. Everyone is encouraged to have a go, learn something new, develop skills and, importantly, have fun along the way.
These are skills and experiences that stay with you for life, as do the friendships you make along the way.
And what a result for Allensmore Club πŸŽ‰
πŸ₯‡ 1st overall in the ploughing classes
πŸ₯‰ 3rd overall in the domestic classes
πŸ† 1st overall on the day!
I am incredibly proud of everyone who took part, had a go and worked together as a team to achieve these results.
It is also a brilliant reminder that points make prizes! It is not always about being 1st, 2nd or 3rd in an individual competition. Every point adds to the overall result, and the combined effort that makes all the difference.
A huge thank you to all the parents who helped with the club entries and supported members throughout the day, and to the County Officers who organised and ran the Ploughing Match.
Young Farmers gives people opportunities to compete, learn, try new things, develop confidence and life skills, make lifelong friends and create memories that stay with you.
That is why I remain so passionate about being involved and giving something back to an organisation that has given me so much over the years.
Always a joy to be part of it. πŸ’šπŸšœ

πŸ’™National Inclusion Week – Building Trust, Navigating ChangeπŸ’™
For us at Loo of the Year Awards, inclusion is not just a word or a campaign. It is something we see, measure, talk about and work to improve every day.
A washroom is something that everyone should be able to use with dignity, independence and confidence, regardless of age, disability, health condition or individual needs.
That is why inclusion is firmly built into the work we do.
Through our 101 inspection criteria, we look beyond simply whether a washroom looks clean. We consider accessibility, baby changing, Changing Places, facilities for people with visible and hidden disabilities, signage, space, safety, usability and the overall experience for the people who need to use them. But we know that measuring standards is only part of the answer.
Over the years, we have worked with organisations and individuals to raise awareness, share knowledge and encourage change, from discussions around accessible and inclusive washrooms, Period Dignity and Changing Places, to working with charities, schools, industry organisations, facilities management professionals and businesses.
We have also brought these conversations into our events, awards and Bog Cast, giving people a platform to share experiences and help others understand why inclusive facilities matter.
And perhaps most importantly, we listen.
We listen to people who use these facilities. We listen to those who clean and maintain them. We listen to washroom technicians, facilities managers, businesses, charities and experts who all bring a different perspective.
Because trust is built by listening, understanding and then taking action.
Change does not always happen overnight. Sometimes it starts with something as simple as asking:
πŸ‘‰ Can everyone use this washroom safely and independently?
πŸ‘‰ What might prevent someone from using it?
πŸ‘‰ Have we considered needs that are not immediately visible?
πŸ‘‰ What could we do better?
Our role is to help organisations identify those opportunities and give them the knowledge and confidence to make improvements.
We believe that better washrooms create better experiences and that inclusion should be part of the standard, not an afterthought.
This National Inclusion Week, we are proud to continue Building Trust, Navigating Change and helping to make away-from-home washrooms more inclusive for everyone. πŸ’™

You never know who will pop up where!
Today it is Cerri, one of our Loo of the Year Awards inspectors, out and about in the sunshine in Bury. 🌞
Our inspectors are travelling the length and breadth of the country, carrying out independent, unannounced inspections and helping us to recognise those establishments that are getting their away-from-home washrooms right.
So, wherever you are in the United Kingdom, keep your eyes peeled…
You never know who will pop up where! πŸ˜‰

And Cerri certainly seems to have found a lovely day for it! β˜€οΈπŸš»
