Week 1 of Young Dumb and Marketing – all I can do is apologise!

I'm gonna level with you guys, this week was a STEEP learning curve.

The whole idea of Young Dumb and Marketing is to share everything I learn, everything that works, everything that fails...

But after page after page of notes and ideas, I'm stuck for what to say, so haven't really provided much value at all – sorry!

But I have taken away THREE HUGE LESSONS.

1ļøāƒ£ Know your Audience.

Ironically, this is one of the things I preach the most at work... But when applying it to my own side quest, I'm coming up short.

When thinking about what to write, I'm torn between a million ideas (basic marketing advice for entrepreneurs, scaling tactics for small businesses, media buying advice, copywriting advice, SEO, creative hooks – the list goes on and on).

I need to identify WHO I'm talking to... who YOU are... What problems you have and how I can help them.

2ļøāƒ£ Know yourself.

I posted 5 times this week. Each time, I wrote like a different person.

In one, I'm Expert Aron... In another, I'm Noob Aron... etc.

I need to work out my own voice, my own style, my own tone.

3ļøāƒ£ Chill out.

I posted 5 times, but wrote about 50 posts... (no joke).

I've been massively overdoing it, whilst completely underdelivering.

There is so much value and knowledge crammed into my head, but in a panic to get it ALL on paper, I'm actually getting NOTHING on paper.

So once again, sorry folks!

Now... before you scroll away, flush the toilet, or look back at the TV, I need you to do something for me (and it will only take a second).

Message me.

Tell me what you want to know about... Perhaps you're curious how other marketers string together offers, how they write hooks, how they do competitor research – anything.

Whatever your question, I'll share what I know... I might just have the golden bullet you've been waiting for.

If Your AI copy sucks... This is why.

Ever tried to get AI to write killer copy for you, only to end up with a load of crap?

You're not alone.

You wouldn't tell an employee "write something good" and expect results, so don't expect AI too either...

Truth is: AI isn't magic. It needs CLEAR DIRECTION.

Good news is, David Garfinkel (one of the world's greatest copywriting coaches) recently revealed why your AI prompts are failing you — and how to fix them.

🚫 5 reasons why your AI Prompts fail 🚫

1ļøāƒ£Structure problems: AI ignores the structure you need in your copy unless you explicitly tell it what that structure is

2ļøāƒ£Tone disasters: You want copy for retired professionals but get something that sounds like it's selling energy drinks to teenagers

3ļøāƒ£Context confusion: AI doesn't understand subtle messages and emotions without guidance

4ļøāƒ£No constraints: Ever notice how AI loves those cringe buzzwords like "embrace," "unlock," and "delve"? That's because you haven't told it what NOT to do

5ļøāƒ£Random content: You ask for one thing, it gives you something completely different — because you didn't specify exactly what you wanted

The solution?

šŸ†Simply stop being lazy with your prompts! šŸ†

David shares a killer prompt template from OpenAI President Greg Brockman, with four critical sections:

1ļøāƒ£ Goal (what you actually want)
2ļøāƒ£ Return Format (how you want it structured)
3ļøāƒ£Warnings (what to avoid)
4ļøāƒ£Context Dump (all the background info)

This is the difference between amateurs and pros using AI. The pros know how to give AI the right instructions to get results that actually convert.

If you're serious about using AI for your marketing, you need to hear this episode. David breaks down exactly how to make AI your copywriting assistant instead of your copywriting disaster.

AOV vs. LTV: Which is more important? āš–ļø

This is a question I hear all the time...

I often hear about the ā€˜superiority’ of Lifetime Value (LTV) over Average Order Value (AOV), and while LTV is undeniably crucial for long-term sustainability, dismissing AOV entirely is a mistake.

Let’s break it down:

AOV: A strong AOV means you’re getting more cash with each sale, this allows you to push your customer acquisition costs higher and outbid competitors. It also helps you figure out what people like to buy together and make smart offers.

LTV: A strong each LTV means customers bring in more profit over their entire relationship with you. This allows you to invest more in keeping those customers happy, as you know they’ll continue to provide value. It creates a stable and predictable revenue stream, reducing the need to constantly acquire new customers and boosting long-term profitability.

Good AOV, but bad LTV?

So you’re good at getting customers to spend a lot in one go, but bad at keeping them coming back… You're missing out on a ABSOLUTENT BANK! Most of the time, repeat customer's are profitable A-F...

Good LTV, but bad AOV?

Customers are loyal and repeatedly purchase from you over a long period, but each individual purchase is tiny. Once again you’re likely missing out on loads of profit.

The key isn’t choosing one over the other. If you do that, you're basically asking ''Which way do I want to LOSE money''...

The key is to strike a balance and have AOV and LTV working in harmony.

How do you balance your AOV and LTV? Let me know in the comments or DM.

3 Ways To Combat ā€˜ā€˜Blank Paper Syndrome’’

Aaah! My first real post…

All my old school friends will see this, my mum will see this…

To top if off, all those industry professionals I’ve been bulk-following all night will see this…

I HAVE to write something compelling… Something valuable! Something, REVOLUTIONARY…

[67 Claude 93 Chat GPT prompts later…]

Nothing.

If you’ve ever been in this^ situation, you know it sucks…

Whether it’s a ā€˜writer’s block’, ā€˜creativity fatigue’ or just good old fashioned ā€˜brain-fog’, we’ve all been there.

Sometimes it would be nice if someone could just give us the answer, right?

WELL… I don’t have it.

(If I did, I’d be a millionaire - Not staying late at work to write a social post to my current audience of: zero people…)

But what I do have, is my top three tips to combat what I call ā€˜ā€˜Blank Paper Syndrome’’

Imitate, Iterate, Innovate

Don’t start with a blank page! Imitate (copy) someone else’s stuff. For example, a competitors best ad.
Now, Iterate from it and play around with their ā€˜ā€˜recipe’’ a bit, move stuff about, add in best performing elements from your best ads.
Finally, innovate… Sit back, look at your Franken-Swipe and ask yourself ā€˜ā€˜is this any good’’, ā€˜ā€˜how can I make this awesome’’.
The end result, something that’s not just new and awesome but also rooted from something that is proven to work.

AI

Yaaawn… I know, everyone is bleating on about AI like a mob of hyperactive sheep, but AI can be awesome. If it’s not, you’re probably using it wrong (sorry).
I’m going to do separate posts about AI tools in the next couple of weeks. For now, have a go at pairing these two tools together:

A) Gemini Deep Research
B) Claude 3.7 Sonnet

Give up

Yup. Give up, go for a v**e, a coffee, an extended lunch. If your boss asks, tell them ā€˜ā€˜Aron said it’s fine’’.
Staring at a screen going around in circles wont work, my best ideas come from when I step away (Although, my best ever ideas were then immediately forgotten on the walk back to the laptop…)

If you have any other ā€˜ā€˜white paper syndrome’’ tips and tricks, hit me up - I’d love to hear about them!
