If a glossy magazine offers you a discounted advert, take a breath before reaching for your credit card.

I know it feels exciting. Seeing your brand in a title like Marie Claire or ELLE sounds like a huge opportunity.

But here’s the question…

When was the last time YOU bought something because of a magazine advert?

Readers flick past ads.

They stop for stories, reviews, gift guides, expert recommendations and features.

That’s earned media. And it often delivers far more credibility than a paid advert ever can.

I’m the person who promotes people like my life depended on it….but when it comes to bigging myself up…🤮

But here goes, one of the lovely founders on my product PR sprint sent me this after it finished -

“I’m gutted the course is over! What I loved most was that I got stuff done. The way you delivered the sessions made it so simple to take action. I already have two confirmed pieces in Father’s Day gift guides. This is just the beginning. Thank-you!”

Honestly, this is what I set out to achieve.

I’ll be honest with you - four people signed up. Yeah I was disappointed because I knew it would be good and I could really help product sellers.

But I ended up with four action takers and I prefer that to people who miss sessions and don’t do the work. One participant attended our session at Box Park during a night out, another dialled in during a family dinner. THAT is commitment.

They didn’t get another course or a programme - they got access to me, a journalist with 40 years’ experience. And 10 as a PR working for some huge brands.

We didn’t sit around and look at slides - we got stuff done. They met a national newspaper shopping editor. I edited their pitches and they sent them.

This was not another course sitting unopened in an inbox - it was action and results.
