Tanacetum is a business grown from Sherry Doyal’s background as a museum conservator of plant material artefacts including basketry and herbaria collections. Her great grandmother lived in the same street.

Sherry now leads workshops using art to explore botany. The monthly window display hopes to spike interest in the art, craft and science of plants.

Knaresborough has many inspiring green spaces and historically boasted 3 basket selling businesses. The historic market terms still show rates charged for baskets sales of produce.

Greenwoods is the longest established legal practice in Knaresborough. Founded by Lynda Greenwood in 1991 following the birth of her daughter, Camilla, Greenwoods was Lynda’s way to be a mother and professional woman at the same time.

Tragically we lost Lynda in 2022 and this could easily been the end of the business, however Camilla and long-time conveyancer, Dawn Hudson, took the reigns and launched the business to new heights.

We now employ ten people and have retained a strong sense of family. We support Knaresborough Town Women’s Team, Knaresborough Cricket Club and as many other local initiatives as we are able to.

Greenwoods specialise in all areas of Residential Conveyancing, Wills, Probate, Estate Administration, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Elderly and Vulnerable Care. We hold a 5 Star rating on Review Solicitors and we are in the top 10% of the highest rated legal practices in the country.

We are fiercely proud Knaresborians and try to support other local businesses wherever we can!

You’ll find Carriages on the corner of Station Road and the High Street, only 50 yards from the railway station, in a property dating back some 400-years, Carriages is an independent, family run bar and restaurant. Depending on the season, our food and menu options include classic gastro-pub food with a modern twist, great Sunday roasts and a wonderful lunch, tapas, and small plates menu. Tasty, well-presented and using the best locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

In addition, we have a great selection of craft beers, small batch spirits, cocktails, and a mighty selection of over 25 wines, many available by the glass.

Food and drinks are served in the cosy, dog friendly 18th-century bar and restaurant areas or outside in the best heated and part covered al fresco area in the town with great views of Knaresborough’s iconic railway station and surrounding countryside.

The School and Dance shop is family owned and run. I took over the business in 2018, after the previous owners retired. I currently offer school uniforms for 2 high schools and 14 primary schools across Knaresborough and surrounding village schools. Additionally, I supply dance wear for local dance schools: leotards, ballet shoes, jazz shoes, character shoes and dance underwear and hosiery.

As a mum to 3 children, I recognise the importance of hardwearing and long lasting uniform and I can say with hand on heart the uniform I sell will be outgrown before it wears out. In todays climate that is something to be proud of. All my customers are offered a personal service and uniform is tried on in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Did you know I also run a savings club all year round that is helpful to many families when budgeting and 10% off King James’s year 7 new starter uniform in June. Appointments are offered and a full 30 minute fitting takes place, giving advice and tips especially for the primary transition to high school children. Appointments outside of normal hours are offered for children that need extra time, a quiet environment or for the shop to be closed. These are usually for primary children starting reception or starting high school.

Knaresborough is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. There are so many things to see, the castle, the riverside, Bebra Gardens not forgetting the planned entertainment activities; Christmas Market, Party in the Park, Easter fair, Knaresborough Bed Race, the list goes on. Why would you want to live anywhere else?

Having worked in every aspect of the hospitality industry and other businesses in Knaresborough since the age of 13, from waitressing, bar management and eventually working as head chef at Six Poor Folk, Market Town Deli has come to fruition as a result of this education from these well established businesses in Knaresborough.

We are able to offer a range of homemade sandwiches, salads, quiches, and much more with a conscious consideration for a broader variety of diets. We understand the difficulty of eating out as a result of this and have made a menu that supports and includes those with intolerances, allergies, vegetarian and vegan based diets.

The Barber Asylum

My business started June 17th 2002, after 16 months travelling around the world I found myself in a dead end job and needed to change my situation. I always felt I could run a business better than the people I had worked for. Give a better service, treat staff better. So I found a little place on Cheapside and decided to go for it.

As we’ve seen recently my business isn’t unique anymore but I feel we still give the best service of any barbers in knaresborough. After 35 years in the industry I still love my job and still want to improve daily.

Interesting fact, my eldest son Elliot, was born exactly 2 weeks after we opened, I was really skint then 🤣

The things I love the most about Knaresborough are the river and the people.
