We are 1 today!

How it’s been a year I don’t know but what I do know is it’s been a year to remember. Lots of hard work, fantastic clients, enormous support and lots and lots of coffee!

I’ve been spending a fair number of hours making curtains this week and it’s been eye opening let me tell you.

I’ve been measuring, pinning, cutting, re-measuring. I’ve fallen out with rulers, lost the scissors more times than I can count and never folded so much in my life.

Why am I telling you this? Well…

This process has been such a great example of how focusing too much on the outcome you want can actually jeopardise its success.

I’ll explain.

I’ve been making these curtains under the careful watch and supervision of a very talented (and patient!) and hugely experienced teacher and creator, my mother!

Don’t get me wrong however, I’m invested. These particular curtains are for me!

I can’t wait for them to hang elegantly in front of my French doors. I can’t wait to no longer be a fish bowl when it gets dark and to draw them each evening for that snug feeling.

PS - it’s this ‘investment’ that can cause us to lose ourselves in the end product and much like me and my curtains, when it comes to your business, believe me you’re invested.

Focusing on what I want however is NOT what’s going to get me the outcome I’m so eager to get to. Paying attention to the numbers on the ruler, the intricacies, the double checking and checking again… this is what’s important.

Understanding how the fabric moves and behaves, choosing the right colour thread and getting that set square even when I really don’t want to know if it’s out again… this is the stuff that will get me the curtains, the outcome and the result that I truly want.

So next time you find yourself gunning for the finish line at a relentless pace and not stopping to see if you’re in the right race… take a moment and remember the curtains, remember to focus on the detail, doing it well and doing it right and the result will take care of itself.

Alongside the brilliant team at HAHN, Lumos has been busy creating the marketing strategy for a relatively new product in the HAHN range. A product with great promise and which is set to have a huge impact on the sector in question.
 
Key elements of this process have been:

- audience identification and understanding
- customer segmentation
- value proposition design
- messaging
- implementation planning and roadmaps

3 things I read and hear every single day...

- I want to grow my business
- I want more sales
- I want more clients

I like to think about growth like this...

whether it's business growth or personal growth...

There are 3 levels:

1 - You do everything
2 - You make decisions but delegate labour
3 - You delegate decisions

Most people start at level 1 (absolutely normal, fine, you got it)
however those who climb up the levels and change those top 3 statements to:

- I am growing my business
- I have tripled my sales
- I work with clients I love and who make me money
are those who...

Are OK with not being necessary!!

This is imperative to go to the next level - to literally level-up!

Challenging - yes
Necessary - yes
Life changing - 100%

One of the most frequent things I hear people talk about or ask for is what I call outputs... creative assets...AKA... the ex*****on.

These come in the form of...

- websites
- adverts
- social media posts
- videos
- webinars
- email newsletters

You get the idea.

Now think about this...

- Before Ronaldo steps up to take a penalty, what does he do?

- Before LeBron James lines up to shoot a free throw, what does he do?

- Before Federer serves at 6-5 in the 5th set, what does he do?
Do they just go for it and hope for the best?

No.

They assess their surroundings.
They consider their oponent.
They consider their strengths and weaknesses.
They use history and previous experience.
They focus the mind.
They focus on the objective.
They rehearse the outcome they want in their mind.
They draw on all their training, their failures and their triumphs.

Once these critical steps have been done and not a moment before..

they execute!

Your business is no different... it requires, demands and deserves the same attention, input, assessment, consideration, time and energy BEFORE you execute.

If you're in constant ex*****on mode and not getting the results you want and need it's time to take a step back and look at...

- Who you serve
- What problems they need solving the most
- How you serve them by solving their problems

If any one of these is out of alignment your EX*****ON won't work... so instead of trying the next platform, blaming your budget or your lack of time go deeper...

- you're highly qualified
- you have years of experience
- you KNOW you can help people
- you've helped people before
- you're eager and ready to go

But you have no clients!

Not only is this frustrating, it's stopping you achieving your goals but more importantly it's preventing those people who need your help from getting it.

Here are some of the classic mistakes experts make that cause this to happen:

- They talk about their products
- They talk about their services
- They talk about what they do
- They talk about their certifications and qualifications
- They use technical language and jargon
- They stay surface level

This might not sound that bad and you know you've seen it a million times... this doesn't mean it works...and believe me it doesn't!

A lot of people don't know what they need but they can relate to their problems...

so instead of presenting them with a technical product or service speak to them in words they can understand about the problems they're struggling with.

This is how you connect and can cut through everything else so you can actually get to the part where you help them.

If you learn how to do this you will automatically and authentically draw people to you, people you can help, and in turn you provide value for your clients and for your business.

Do you remember those compulsory language classes (mine was French) where you had to learn phrases like 'Quelle heure est-il? and 'Où se trouve la station de métro la plus proche?'

You'd stumble about the words, laughing with friends and dread the annual family holiday to France where your parents would make you 'practice' with the waiter.

Horrible memory isn't it!

- you felt uncomfortable
- you're palms started to sweat
- you had no idea what was coming out of your mouth
- the waiter certainly didn't understand you

And all you were trying to do is ask for the menu!

Well this may be more than a memory...

When you're talking about your products and services to those you believe to be prospective clients...

it's likely your high school french is what they are hearing...

Not what you wanted to hear I know.. but my aim is to be helpful which is not always the most comfortable for the recipient.

So why are they hearing clumsy French?

- You're talking about what you do, what you know and what you sell
- You're describing your product or service (like every other 'pitch' they've heard)
- You're using the fancy 'industry' terms you'd use with peers at a conference instead of talking to them in their language

Want to speak like a native?

- Start listening to your prospects problems/pain points
- Start describing how you, your product, service or skill can eliminate these problems, address their issues and CAN and WILL better their life
- Start talking the language of emotion, solution, connection
- Start talking about the benefits working with you brings
- Show them the way off the mountain they're trapped on
