I heard a conversation the other day. It was about the question, “Is there one thing that would put you into the top 0.01% of marketers, a marketing superpower?” And if so, what is it? That caught my attention right there!

…Don’t think of yourself as ‘doing marketing’. Rather there are people whose lives could be improved by getting to know something that someone else can do for them, or can offer them. It enables you to show another person that they can do things that they did not think they could do. And to do it in a way that is genuine and caring. Don’t just sell, sell, sell. That is not my way. If I have to sell something I’ve done something wrong. Rather, how do I get the obvious right solution to a person’s problem in front of that person, so that it is obvious? That is marketing - or at least what marketing should be…

I was watching a video from Todd Brown the other day. He said, in marketing, what we want to do is turn the prospect’s desire for the result into a demand for our product... before we ever try to sell anything.

He told a story of how he asked Tony Zhao, founder of Agora, how he managed to grow Agora so big so fast. He was expecting the typical answer – large capital, expensive copywriters,... It is a report they have produced on cultural trends in 2022. There have been so many huge shifts in a relatively short time. We have had Covid-19 and lockdowns, accelerated digitisation, the rise of the Zoom phenomenon, increases in technology, communications and infrastructure with 5G / AI / Metaverse. Technology has changed, user behaviour has changed, the use of technology has changed, work-from-home has changed. How we communicate and earn a living has changed. What we value has changed. There are business activities and practices that worked 5 years ago that have simply gone. The world has changed. The way we earn a living has changed. Consumer behaviour has changed. As we know, a key to business success lies in getting customers. No customers – no business, no matter how great the product.

When times are easy, getting customers may well be easy too. But in tougher times, you have to learn the skill of getting customers and get good at marketing.

Mastering marketing will make the difference between surviving or not surviving, or the difference between struggling and thriving. If you want to thrive in 2022, up-skill your marketing.

To grow, there are really only three tactics:

What are Chatbots and why should I pay attention to them?

Chatbots are becoming increasingly common, with new features becoming available all the time. There are various different kinds of chatbots. The ones we work with represent a new channel of automation and communication with customers on Facebook Messenger and Instagram. We can build chatbots that drive conversations with customers, asking questions, getting information, offering options, providing highly-targeted, personalised information and capability. This ‘conversational commerce’ is a significant trend to note.

In the past, it tended to be the products and prices that had the biggest impact on conversion and customer loyalty. These days it is more the positive customer experience (CX). Data shows that over 80% of customers are willing to pay more for getting a better experience. Chatbots are an excellent tool for improving the customer experience at all stages of the sales funnel, from initial contact to completed sale, to ongoing nurturing of happy customers. Equally, chatbots are not limited to the marketing space – all company communications can be improved.

With over a billion users in both FB Messenger and in Instagram, increasing social media uptake, increasing features offered by the chatbots ad the platforms they run in, chatbots and ‘conversational commerce’ really should be a part of your digital marketing strategy. If it is not – I suggest it is only a matter of time before you start to fall behind.

Marketing Strategy - What State Is Yours?
I think strategy is critical for business. It underpins everything. It informs all decisions. It summarises what you are aiming at and from it you can plan how to get to that. It should be a living document, and should be reviewed at least quarterly.

A Business Strategy defines what you are aiming at in your business. A Marketing Strategy defines how you will market your business products or services.

In the absence of a strategy, activity is just ‘doing stuff’. It might be helpful, it might not. It might be a productive use of your time, it might not. One of my favourite quotes is from Sun Tzu, The Art of War -
“Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat”

For me, a huge lesson in the entrepreneurial adventure of starting your own business – handle your time effectively. Do things that will best move the needle forward. For that, you need to know what actions will best move the needle forward. For this you need a strategy and a plan.

I’d like to share some principles of a Marketing Strategy. You have to start somewhere, and this is a reasonable place to start, if you don’t already have one in place. If you do already have one, maybe it can highlight areas that might be missing. If you notice ‘holes’ in my template, let me know - I'm always happy to learn.

Obviously, this does not constitute “marketing advice” – it is a sharing of what I have found useful, and hopefully it can serve as a starting point.

One of my aims in sharing this, is empowerment. I want to learn, to grow, to develop, to enjoy the journey, to share. Hopefully it is a win-win for everyone.

Importance of Organic Outreach - CONSISTENCY

How is your business going? Have enough customers and leads?

Most people in business, especially in business for themselves, could always use more. Paid advertising, outsourced advertising, organic outreach – so many opinions on what to do out there these days.

Organic outreach is something that you can do for yourself, for free and – I think – should be done whatever else you are doing. It helps ‘grease the wheels’ and amplify everything else you are doing, including any paid ads.
