Marilyn Diptych (2/2): Warhol's Marilyn's have been reproduced hundreds of thousands of times all around the world, in print, digital & whatever else!
I'm not sure if that's ironic or perfectly fitting, but either way, a reproduction still can't compare to being up-close with an original.
The first thing that strikes me is how unique each print actually is. (Which is ironic) If you've ever done any type of printing, this may seem an obvious point, but not one I think about when thinking of Warhol's work.
The amount of ink in each print, position of each layer of colour, how the texture of the canvas shows through. On the mono canvas, the Artist's pencil lines clearly mark the frame for each print's position. All this contributes to the uniqueness of each portrait.
This is the benefit of getting up close with Art - To study the marks made & the lines drawn is part of the way we experience Art & if you allow it, through some form of transcendence, to feel closer to the Artist themself in their moment of creation, their use of the physical materials & their thoughts and feelings as they created it.
