We are pleased to share these lovely shots of the light antennas from our recent project for Co-op Live!

The twin antenna structures reimagine Manchester's skyline and industrial past through a modern crystalline design, complementing the route’s glowing colour palette. During the day, the acrylic surfaces create shifting colour patterns, while at night, they become vibrant beacons, illuminating the surroundings and helping to guide visitors along the route. ✨

The two 9-metre tall antennas form part of the 11-piece public art trail we concepted, fabricated and installed for Co-op Live's 'The City Link' walking route.

We fabricated an 11-piece public art trail for Co-op Live's new walking route 🛠️

Fabricated in conjunction with JVD Engineering and Stage One, we constructed each installation in the workshop before transporting it to Manchester and installing it on site.

The largest installation, an 8-metre tall light arch, welcomes visitors to the arena, counting those that pass through and displaying above in showcase of the effort made to travel sustainably.

The geometric frosted acrylic panels allow the light to pass through, resulting in a beautiful shift as the light fades and dusk settles, whereby internal lighting illuminates the artwork from within to create an entirely new effect.

We are incredibly proud to have produced this work from initial ideation through to fabrication.

Located on our recent public art trail for Co-op Live visitors will discover a tranquil hive of illuminated LED hexagons and an audio soundscape 🎵

Working with SI Electrical and Architainment to produce this installation, each of the 200+ LED lightboxes was individually installed and can be independently colour-controlled and dimmed, illuminating the archway passage. Acting as a playful nod to the Manchester bee iconography, the hexagonal design fills the underside of the bridge and spills out from each side, bringing intrigue and interest to this otherwise normal setting.

Accompanying the Hive Bridge is a custom surround soundscape produced by the talented Manchester-based artist Hayely Suviste. Depicting the sounds of Manchester through themes of Nature, Sport & Music, this bespoke audio piece paints a vibrant picture of Manchester building excitement and atmosphere for those passing through.

“I hope the installation enhances and supports the emotions evoked by the event audiences are attending, providing a moment of reflection and encouraging them to slow down and appreciate the sounds around them. Ultimately making their walk to and from the venue into a memorable and impactful part of their experience.” - Hayely Suviste

Opening day for our 9-part public art trail for Co-op Live 🎉

Our studio recently delivered a turnkey creative solution for the public art trail along the walking route to the new Co-op Live arena in Manchester city centre.

To celebrate the opening of the walking route, visitors were welcomed to be the first to experience the new trail and take a glimpse at the installations and the venue itself. An energetic parade comprising a live band, performers, dancers and flags filled the trail as concert-goers walked up towards the venue, experiencing each artwork along the way.

After months of dedicated work, it was a wonderful sight to see people of all ages engaging with the installations and soaking up the atmosphere.

The walking route is now open and visitors are free to walk the public art trail from New Islington to the Etihad Campus stops in central Manchester.

Our latest project for the Co-op Live arena is illuminating Manchester’s city centre 🌅

We’re delighted to share more imagery from our latest work. The 9-part public art trail marking the walking route to the brand new Co-op Live arena was brought to life by our design studio from creative design to technical build and installation.

Designed to create moments of interaction along the route and build suspense for those travelling to the arena, our studio incorporated bespoke lighting design to illuminate each artwork, drawing attention to the trail and sparking a sense of joy and delight in concert-goers.

The public art trail considers visitors' experience both in the daytime and when dusk settles, coming alive through colour, light and sound. It’s been great to see public reactions from those who have walked the route and others who have passed by on the local tram route.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at our latest project 👀

We recently produced, designed and delivered a city centre public art trail to encourage visitors to travel by foot to the Co-op Live arena, culminating in months of meticulous onsite preparation and hard work.

Working with our incredible network of trusted suppliers, NEWSUBSTANCE led the detailed engineering, and managed a complex fabrication and installation programme featuring bespoke lighting design and scenic treatment, each artwork required careful consideration and therefore an expert team on hand to help the project come to life.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes images taken during our time on site, where it was all hands on deck - despite the turbulent Northern weather conditions! We look forward to sharing more photos of each finished installation soon.

🌟The team of wonderful partners and suppliers NEWSUBSTANCE collaborated with on this project included: Stage One Creative Services Ltd, Bryne Civil Solutions, SI Electrical, Architainment Lighting, JVD Engineering, DP^2, Optimal Crewing, Dock Street Events, Deryncoch Creative Production, The Technical Department, tube UK Limited and a brilliant extended team of freelancers and artists.

It always starts with pen and paper…

At NEWSUBSTANCE, when wanting to successfully realise the creative vision of a complex design, we always find it best to start with the basics and our recent work for Doja Cat was no different.

To deliver the 12m T Rex, our in-house team of expert engineers had to ensure that the structure's core movement was historically accurate and achievable through puppeteered limbs.

To do this, we worked with specialist puppeteer Tahra Zafar and designers from the very start of the fabrication process to better understand the functional movement needed, and ensure we delivered a smooth final design.

Sometimes traditional methods prove most effective, and with a printed copy of the design, some safety pins and a pen this incredible puppeteered dinosaur started to come to life 🦖

Take a trip through the years as our unique twinkling technology illuminates skies around the globe...

Utilising our 'Falling Stars' design across various ceremonies, festivals and audience-focused events, these luminous paper 'Stars' fill the sky with a magnificent glow and are designed to gracefully flutter to the ground, leaving audiences in awe and surrounded by dancing light.

As audiences catch the synthetic paper helicopters, each star can be customised with specific messages and branding, providing a keepsake token that attendees can take home. Individual LED's also allow for variation in programming, tailoring the colours and patterns for each experience, creating a truly spectacular moment.

As we continue to evolve the technology, get in touch to learn more about how Falling Stars can elevate your next project and visit our website for more information on the projects below.

When Doja Cat calls for a dinosaur, we build a dinosaur...

Before heading out to sunny California, this creature began its life in our workshop based in Leeds, UK. From a team of specialist sculptures carving out polystyrene & foam bones to expert engineers crafting aluminium limbs and joints. The fabrication of this beast went through numerous stages of development before being shipped out.

It was great to utilise local craftsmanship as well as collaborate globally with the talented Silent House, Parker Genoway and Brett Alan Nelson on this project.

We delivered a gigantic T-Rex for Doja Cat's main stage Coachella performance🚨🦖

A few weekends ago, Doja Cat headlined the Coachella stage with an unforgettable performance, accompanied by a giant puppeteered T-Rex. Designed and engineered by us the colossal skeletal marvel wowed fans as it moved across the stage and loomed over the audience.

With a quick turnaround time, our creative studio has been working hard alongside a talented team of sculptors, artists and puppet specialists to successfully bring this Jurassic spectacle to life.

Produced in collaboration with SilentHouse, Parker Genoway and Brett Alan-Nelson.
