✨ Thrilled to have been a panelist on the Girls in Marketing "Back to Basics: Marketing 101" Webinar on all things Design!

We had such a great conversation about the foundations of design and how we can put them into our marketing, and how even simple, thoughtful choices can make campaigns more impactful and accessible.

A huge thank you to Girls in Marketing and Olivia Mae Hanlon for creating the space for learning and connection in this amazing community and to my co-panelists Martina Gordeen and Margaret Ward for sharing their insights and tips!

It's always so inspiring to be part of a community that cheers marketers on at every stage of their journey!

👩‍💻 If you joined live, I'd love to hear your takeaways!

✨ If you missed it you can watch it here https://youtu.be/akJN2rPAduI?si=ksFN2q_cgBUmxZ7W and make sure to keep and eye on Girls in Marketing for future events - they're always packed with value!

Your audience doesn’t care about your font choices.

Harsh truth: people care about whether they can understand your message. That’s it.

Design isn’t decoration; it’s communication.

If the message is buried under too many colours, effects, or competing visuals… your design isn’t doing its job. Simplicity > complexity, always wins.

Here are my design rules:
- One focal point
- Two typefaces max
- A colour palette that supports your message, not your ego

With all that, I'd love to know, what’s one design “rule” you swear by?

I've been reflecting recently and it's crazy to think it’s been six years since I graduated from the University of Chester with a First in Graphic Design!
SO MUCH has changed since then, I've been on a real journey:

2019: Started as a Junior Presentation Designer in Liverpool.

2020: Navigated the challenges of furlough and COVID.

End of 2020: Shifted into marketing within the education sector.

2022 - Now: Creative Lead at Wirral Met College.

Every step has been a huge learning experience and I'm so thankful for every stage of the process!

One of the biggest lessons? Battling imposter syndrome. It’s something we were taught about in uni, but it really hit me when I took on roles with more responsibility. I’m so glad I pushed through it, because if I hadn't, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

My biggest takeaway is this: Don’t let imposter syndrome stop you from reaching your full potential.

I'd love to hear about your career journey. What's one key takeaway from your own experience?

Our Design Term for this Saturday is: Negative Space aka White Space

What is it? Negative space isn't just 'blank' space! It's a powerful design tool that gives your work room to breathe.

Why's it important? When used creatively, it can also create a secondary image, like the hidden rhino horn, tail or tusk in the Chester Zoo logo!

Don't be afraid of the void, it might just be the best thing about your design!

Welcome to my first Design Term Saturday!

Today's term is: Kerning

What is it? Kerning is the art of adjusting the space between individual letters.

Why does it matter? Bad kerning can make a word look messy and hard to read, but good kerning makes text feel balanced and professional. You can make such a big change to the tone of a message JUST by how you present it! It's a small detail that makes a HUGE difference!
