๐ŸŸฉ Munnar is GREEN! ๐ŸŸฉ

๐Ÿƒ In the tea leaves that travel the world, arranged geometrically on the gentle hills.

๐ŸŒณ It is green in the mountains of the Eravikulam National Park.

๐Ÿ’š It is the green itself that hides the many gorgeous steep waterfalls of the region

๐Ÿ› It is green all year round, even in the small details.

Among the experiences that you can confidently book with your local Tour Operator .info you can find:

โญ Mountain hiking and waterfall bath
โญ Anakulam and wild elephant village tour
โญ Kanthaloor fruits farm village trip
โญ Spice trail with sunset view
โญ Home cooking classes
and of course,
โญ Tea trail tour and tea factory experience

MUNNAR TOWNis the tourist hub of the region.
From here, visitors can start a tea plantation walk, visit the Eravikulam National Park hoping to spot elephants, go mountain hiking, and indulge themselves in waterfall baths.

But I wonder how much time they reserve to explore the town centre itself.

I asked my local guide to take me to one of my favourite spots in any town: the LOCAL MARKET.

Here is what I found:

The smell of freshly picked cardamom confuses my senses when it comes closer with peppercorn and cinnamon, my brain recognises the many familiar SPICE scents, but after a while gives up to the inebriating mixture.

Infinite varieties of CHOCOLATE bars and NUTS are bought in large quantities from the local food specialist for the satisfaction of your family member's palate and the enrichment of your table.

Tons of garlic and dry fish form many picturesque shades of grey and brown on the STALL, covering almost completely the vendor, who surprises me with an amicable smile from the piles of coconuts and chopped ginger.

A TAILOR at work, outside his tiny shop, pushing the pedals of his sewing machine with his bare foot, reminded me of the tailors I met in Harar, Ethiopia (https://travellerstoryteller.com/intro-welcome-to-east-africa/)

A shop owner is packing the freshly prepared famous BANANA CHIPS, rigorously cooked in coconut oil, in front of my eyes, at a race pace, while the amount of green banana skins fills up the white bag next to him.

A local vendor is creating garlands of Jasmine and other FLOWERS in a matter of seconds, while the variety of colours on its stall increases.

Leaving the frenetic rhythm of the mundane downtown life, I find refuge in the colourful TEMPLE, nestled on top of the hill, a few minutes walk from the main road.
Although it is under refurbishment, it is nonetheless busy, and my guide and I need to queue to join the devotees in a little procession inside its walls to reach the shrine where the prayers and the offerings are directed.

Not far, on a nearby hill, stands the big local MOSQUE start receiving the people for the evening gathering.

The second day was spent visiting a local community near the town of Munnar: Thamil C.
We left the main road and took a rocky path uphill.

๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒฑ
After a while, I began to see tea plantations, and soon they were all around our tuk-tuk.
My driver's excitement was visibly growing by the second.
He looked around and then stopped the vehicle at what, as I soon realised, was a carefully chosen panoramic point.
He jumped out of the driver's seat and invited me to follow him and look down, while he joyfully proclaimed, "There it is: that is my community."

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ
Hidden between the plantation and the forest, a cluster of colourful houses with tin roofs emerged from the greenery.
I don't know if many of his customers ever asked to visit the village.
That's probably why he was so excited.

Back behind the wheel, it's time to see it up close.

๐Ÿ‘ญ๐Ÿพ
Three generations of women were sitting in one of the doorways: the grandmother, the mother, and the three daughters, standing still, looking in my direction with shy smiles.
The arrival of the familiar tuk-tuk had also interrupted the work of other women, busy sorting the grains of freshly harvested crops, chatting about daily events.

My driver's wife works on the tea plantation, like many others in this community.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐ŸŒพ
It's a long and physically demanding job, I see it in her eyes as she talks about it.
But today isn't a work day; it's family time.
The children rest on the beds pushed together due to the limited space, checking their phones or playing with each other.

๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป
After some time filled with pleasant chats, grateful for the rejuvenating tea and gentle neck massage I received from the kind lady, I said goodbye.
We set off in the tuk-tuk, leaving behind their barking dog and a rooster running toward the side road, startled by the noise of our engine.
Back to Munnar town for the evening.

In any destination, we can travel using various modes of transportation.
๐Ÿ๏ธ ๐Ÿฅพ ๐Ÿš— ๐Ÿ›ต ๐ŸšŒ ๐Ÿš‚ ๐Ÿšฒ
During my last visit to , I had the opportunity to explore Munnar by tuk-tuk.
The trip was organised by Munnar info.in, a local Tour Operator recommended to me for its practices.

๐Ÿ›บ
Travelling by tuk-tuk has allowed me to slow down not only the pace of my journey, but also my perspective.
On a tuk-tuk, things pass more slowly before my eyes.
I feel that somehow, I'm more within reach.
And, most importantly, I'm more focused on the places I'm passing through - more zoomed-in - , which is how I love to experience my travels.

๐Ÿ‘ฃ
The opportunity to stop is easier because I'm almost walking.
So I stopped several times, once to meet a local vendor on his motorbike, proudly and carefully carrying all sorts of small items that community members might need on a daily basis.

๐Ÿš
The slower pace of the journey also allows my driver to manage the trip with greater freedom.
I can definitely sense his joy at being able to hop on and off his Ape at will to share with me the most beautiful spots in the tranquil setting of the green hills where he grew up.

He made a few stops, intent on surprising today's traveller and sharing the wonders of Munnar's nature.

๐Ÿ“
A note on .
My driver is one of 55 local community members who have joined MunnarInfo.in as drivers and workers to offer high-impact, locally-owned travel experiences, in line with the responsible practices of Responsible Tourism Mission.
However, I've discovered that the direct impact of the small business is even greater.

Stay tuned to learn more about travel experience

Do you remember BERTHAโ“

She was the protagonist of THE FIRST POSTCARD of TravellerStoryteller's series, written in January 2021 (before any other imitations came out).

If you never attended the CULTURAL FESTIVAL you shouldn't miss this year's edition running from 1-6 September in Musanze, Northern Rwanda.

If you need any support in planning your trip to Rwanda, before and after the Festival, you can contact me at [email protected]
