We are devastated to learn that Russian authorities in the occupied Ukrainian city 🇺🇦of Mariupol have begun demolishing most of its drama theatre, where Ukrainian authorities say hundreds died in an air bombardment in March. 💔

Ukrainian officials denounced the demolition as a bid to cover up the deaths in the March 16 bombardment and wipe out Ukrainian culture.

It is well known that many of the city’s Ukrainian street names are reverting to Soviet ones, with the Avenue of Peace that cuts through Mariupol to be labelled Lenin Avenue. Even the large sign that announces the name of the city at its entrance has been Russified, repainted with the red, white and blue of the Russian flag and the Russian spelling.

In the other part of the world, a group of Ukrainian theatre artists, having fled their hometown of Kharkiv during the ongoing Russian invasion, performed (in Philadelphia) 🇺🇸a play of their own devising, “Mothermotherland.”

“I found that the silver lining of this invasion was that people finally started asking: What is Ukraine? Where is Ukraine? They became curious about Ukraine. So, it became this opportunity to find funding and people who were willing to support bringing a project here in America”, said Audrey, the daughter of the theatre company founder.

Going forward, we will be talking about movies and theatre across the world. Stay tuned!

Today, we feel privileged to highlight the works of 3 prominent female directors from Iran.

Samira, the wonder kid, for reasons unknown, hasn’t made a film in more than a decade (nor left any trace of activity online at all). And Shirin, as we know, currently lives in exile in New York. She took part in a 3-day hunger strike at the UN headquarters in NYC in protest of the 2009 Iranian presidential elections and recently, joined protests about the death of Mahsa Amini.

Rakhshan, 68, was last seen as the panelist at Venice festival in 2017.

📌A world premiere is always a special occasion for any director as it's the culmination of a labour of love.

Guillermo del Toro's presentation of Pinocchio at was a celebration but also a commemoration as the director's mother died just a day before.

Del Toro has been working on this film for the past 15 years, a period he describes as half of his career 💜

"The thing that I remember most clearly is how scary the world seems to Pinocchio," del Toro said on the red carpet.

"Pinocchio is normally a story about obedience. I wanted to make one about disobedience."

Before the film was screened, he also paid tribute to his mother: “I just want to say, my mother just passed away, and this was very special for her and me. This is not only the first time you’ll see the movie, it’s the first time she’ll see the movie with us. Thank you.”

🎬The film will be available on Netflix from 9 December.

Arts Council England (ACE) recently announced a new strategy to their funding portfolio across England. The ACE has been crucial in supporting many of the country’s national institutions, and freelance projects, since 1946. The new strategy moves a lot of the councils funding towards the North of England, in line with their belief that 'talent is everywhere, opportunity is not'. So in attempts to ‘balance out’ opportunity, they have made changes to the funding portfolio’s.

Naturally, with change comes discourse. Marches were held at ACE’s offices across the country to dispute loss of funding to some of England’s favourite institutions, including The Watermill Theatre & English National Opera losing the majority of their funds. Some are vocal, some are defiant, some are accepting of change. Either way, jobs will be lost and jobs will be made. It’s a tricky one. What are your thoughts?
