What SEOs need to prepare for:

👉 HELPFUL CONTENT 4 UPDATE ONWARDS

� What is it:
Adjustment to how Google perceives "helpful" content with real time promotion and demotion of content.

👑 Why is it important:
It will mean more reactive SERPS - it is also likely to see the utilisation of anonymized data for user behaviour. ML/AI will be able to utilise this data for the evaluation of "what's helpful"

⚠ How it effects you:
Your content shouldn't just be content for the sake of it being content - a huge amount of content is produced for SEO and not for users - giant slabs of text, neverending articles hammering every aspect of a niche - AI will better distinguish between something that's good for users vs something created to rank.

⚠ Key Considerations:

✔ Information prioritisation - the order of your content - sorted by importance - above the fold, centre fold, lower fold - what goes where

✔ User intent - transactional (CTA/FILTERING/BRAND/REVIEWS), informational (CONSTRUCT, MEDIA, LINKS, STRUCTURED DATA)

✔ E-E-A-T / YMYL - blended ranking factors to support your helpful content

✔ Writing style, coverage, accuracy, factual support

✔ Peoples aggregated behaviour (anonymized) - what does engagement / interactivity data say about your content? are you looking at combined metrics? time on page/session vs scroll depth, click interactions, behaviour flow between key pages?

👉 GENERATIVE AI IN SERPS

� What is it:
Above the fold AI content injection / SERP feature injection designed to better meet searcher needs by using AI content that's highly specific to the end users query - bringing in interactive features and bringing more data direct to SERP

👑 Why is it important:
It will change how people get answers to their questions, how people find what they are looking for, how they interact with SERP after an initial search.

⚠ How it effects you:
This will create far more SERP NOISE above the fold - it will likely increase the volume of zero click searches and a reduction in click performance by position - lowering CTR. This is more likely to impact informational searches (with nuances for YMYL niches etc.) expect to see CTR slippage - increasing the importance of a number #1 position over top 3 as more users are likely to drop off above the fold. Expect to see some disruption to traffic.

⚠ Key Considerations:

✔ Top positions will become even MORE important with a higher probability of faster click decay by position

✔ CTR optimisation will become even MORE important to hoover up traffic crumbs where generative AI has the greatest impact on serving users what they want without them having to visit a website

✔ Work to become a "high quality source" of data for inclusion in generative AI features

✔ Fully capitalise on SCHEMA and look at traffic source diversification - reduce "at the point" impact

This year - we're going to see some exciting changes - SEOs shouldn't panic, adapt, adopt and upskill

What happens when your location page strategy gets your whole website deindexed from Google.

We've all been there - URLS start to slip - the clicks tail off.

Since this is such a common thing within SEO I thought I'd put together a 100 slide deck on how to refresh dying content.

Here I show you and explain the process of identification, query click gap, SERP analysis, NLP brief generation, E-E-A-T and uptake.

Dying content or "content decay" where content heads on a downward trajectory can't always be resolved just by "refreshing" content - so changing that date or moving a few bits around generally isn't enough.

Common reasons why content goes into decline:

👉 SERP shift (algo tied / non algo tied) - basically, Google's ranking factors / weighting shift - so your content becomes devalued but not directly.

👉 Intent shift - if a users needs can be met by more direct content or better IP (information prioritisation) then a SERP can adjust for shorter form content - at this point you'll often see changes to things such as FAQ snippets / PAA / knowledgeboxes - so, if that long-form article is now overkill because it doesn't address what a user needs in a more condensed format - you can see rank slip (this is why I cover content length by position)

👉 SERP randomisation - RankBrain and other factors still result in result anomalies and some result randomisation (in that certain content won't fit the bill of something that should rank) - but, that new result can lead to displacement - small position losses in NOISY serps can cause a significant loss in clicks

👉 Search appearance losses - disappearing FAQ rich snippets and other search appearance features can often contribute to click decline

👉 Loss of link equity - if something like SpamBrain hits and devalues links that were passing on equity to your page/domain - this can have a knock on effect

Then there is of course factors on the page/domain itself:

👉 Rendering issues i.e. resource blocking

👉 Wider domain performance issues resulting in drag down on pre-existing content i.e. if you end up with larger index bloat and link equity being diluted by lots of content that Google knows of but isn't indexing - this isn't ideal. Site with lots of index bloat can end up with performance impact for content that remains indexed

👉 General domain fatigue (sites that have been around and subject to issues over time) - if they have persisted in ranking for years, they can get hit by core updates which leads to a snowball effect where the decline is sustained irrespective of efforts (this is very real) you can try almost anything and see decline persist - in a way, SERPS hav to change eventually - domains that have sustained rank for a long time can naturally see things slip away as part of the "fatigue" effect - SERPS refresh with new blood every so often - these can persistently displace more authoritative results that have sustained rank for long periods of time

👉 and lots of other factors.
