WEARING MY HEART ON MY SLEEVE(less)

I’m not playing. I wear this because I believe in this.

I wore this to a festival at the weekend. Plenty of nods and comments of approval. Some fist bumps.

Walked into a pub in Blackheath, and got some strange looks. I guess if you are upset by the sentiment, you may be part of the problem.

But it’s OK to speak out when 1 in 3 children in the capital are living in poverty.

🐷 UK billionaires amassed £182 billion in 2024, equivalent to around £35 million per day, according to Oxfam
🛠️ Full-time average annual salary (2024): £37,430 (ONS)
🛠️ The Commons Library reports median hourly earnings for full-time employees at April 2024 as £18.64

Extractive capitalism is starving our children. This isn’t a cost of living crisis, it is a distribution of wealth crisis.

What to do?

The answer is there in black and white.

Tax the rich.

I had that Duffer St.George ‘Hang loose’ baseball T. I made it last an age.

I wore it on my first weekend in London. A girl in Camden stopped me in the market and complimented me on it. Next day me and a mate went to carnival. From across the street, in a one a million London occurrence, someone shouted “oi, your the Acid Jazz guy!” It was the same girl.

I was 18. I felt the dogs knackers. I thought London was the greatest place on earth.

It’s Summer 96.

3 am Sunday morning. The dull heat of the previous day is still escaping the cement and buildings, even as the breeze blows through your bedroom window.
Smiling, warm, a little high…you are looking for a blank cassette.

You’ve been DJing at a mates house party. Well, you say DJing but all you can afford are some crappy belt drives. The belts got really slack in the heat, so you gave up trying to beat match and just started playing party tracks. That’s cool. More relaxed and the crowd just want to hear good tunes and you brought a decent box with you.

You play “Step on”.

As the piano riff kicks in, she walks over. “Please don’t ask for the Spice Girls” you say to yourself.

“You know this is a cover right.”

S**t. You didn’t.

A little while later you are sat in the garden. You share a smoke and a couple of bottles of H***h. The munchies kick in so you walk to the corner shop and buy a load of salt and vinegar Space Raiders.

She gives you her pager number.

You’ve already spent a fiver leaving messages with other covers that are better than the originals.

And now you are looking for blank tape. It’ll need to be a 120. You can’t get this playlist onto a 60. “Is a 120, a bit keen?”
