The Snare

Sonic characteristics include a crisp, clear 'attack' combined with plenty body and a nice, clear decay. So many 'good' snares have too much focus on the attack or the sustain, to the detriment of the other. While the attack gives the drum its characteristic bite a snare will sound thin if there's no weight to it, particularly when you start to process it in a mix. The rich sustain of

these drums means it will record well, and that compression and other mix processing will be easier, as common issues like hi-hat leakage into the snare mic will be less problematic. This makes the drum ideal for recording sessions, for a natural drum sound in small venues, or a big rock sound when miked up on a large stage. Richie Stevens (drummer of Boy George, Soul II Soul, Tina Turner, Simply Red, Culture Club) called me up last month as he was not happy with his Pearl Professional DX bass drum from the 80's and asked me wether I can help him out with a special kick drum according to his specification with unique sound characteristics. Of course I said 'YES' ! Here is the result.
