Maria Aurelia Riese Artist ’s Masks is a compelling and beautifully haunting series. A body of work she kept locked away for years, something unresolved from a childhood in post-war Vienna, Aurelia grew up surrounded by her grandmother’s death masks of composers. Masks, for Riese, are transmissions between life and death, between tragedy and comedy, between the real and the superimposed. Between what we bury and what eventually asks for release.
