I'm looking forward to watching this BBC series. There are countless women I could nominate as a 'Fierce Woman', but thinking about Colour, I would nominate Dorothy Nickerson, an an American color scientist and technologist who made important contributions to international colour standards, which was a newly emerging field which she began contributing to in the late 1920s. Technologies she was instrumental in developing are still in use today, as are her colour fans, in fields including agriculture and horticulture.

Welcome to the Life Colour page. As an analyst trained in the Sci\ART system, I am fascinated by the interconnections between the science and art of colour. Even people who are completely colour blind have their visual experience shaped by colour, since the degree to which objects absorb or reflect light determines the appearance of the object in greyscale. And wavelengths outside of the human-visible spectrum can perceived in other ways. For example we can the heat of infra-red light, and skin registers UV light in the form of tanning and sunburn. I wanted to share this fascinating film, from the Natural History Museum, a conversation between scientists and artists, including a man who uses technology to 'hear' colour. What is the most unusual thing you have noticed about colour perception?

Join scientists and artists as they reflect on colour and vision in nature and beyond, how our experiences of colour differ, and the impact of technology.
