When pufferfish inflate, they release a toxin into all who touch them.
This toxin is deadly in high doses; however, in small doses, it has a narcotic effect.
As a result, if dolphins gently "bop" them with their noses, the fish gives them a mild high. So the dolphins purposely inflate pufferfish and pass it around to their dolphin friends, turning it into a fun social activity.
Well, it's fun for the dolphins. Not so much for the poor, startled-looking puffer.
