The latest release from Zino is the Zino Honduras. I had the Robusto and as the name suggests it contains Honduran to***co. The wrapper has a lovely dark brown oily sheen to it. The band is red as appose to the yellow on the Nicaraguan one. I get a dark chocolate malty note on the cold draw. You can tell immediately from the light this packs a bit more of a punch than its Nicaraguan counterpart. There’s a strong earthy woody note and a spice that tickles the tongue. As the cigar settles in to the second third the spice eases off but the rich woody, earthy notes remain. There is a sweetness I can’t quite put my finger on. The construction as ever is fairly impressive this thing smokes like a chimney. Just before the final third this cigar took a massive downward spiral for me the cigar became very dry and acrid to the point of being unpleasant. I persevered through this for the sake of the review. I tried to purge the cigar and attempt to clear it out but it remained bitter. Maybe it requires a longer time to rest in the humidor. I reached out to a friend who had smoked the toro at the weekend who said he didn’t experience the acrid taste. I find the Zino Nicaragua a solid if not unremarkable cigar. I was hoping the Hondouran one would be a similar stronger version and it’s not quite there for me.

Last year I visited the wonderful Palais Du Ciagre in St Tropez. I spoke with the owner who showed me around his store and some wonderful ci**rs. I still regret not picking up the box of Fundadores! I did however pick up one of his own robustos. He advised me to have a good meal beforehand! This is a Nicaraguan cigar and has a smooth dark Maduro wrapper and a classy black gold and white band. The light revealed lovely Earthy woody chocolate noted there’s a pleasant light sweetness to this cigar. As it progresses I pick up a slight liquorice note to go with the woody chocolate flavour. This has a good strength to it without being overpowering. The cigar ramps up in gear in the final third the wood, earth and chocolate notes intensify and there is a hint of pepper heat. This cigar lasted for almost 2 hours very impressive and I enjoyed reminiscing about the South of France as I smoked this one.

I slipped back into the Perdomo catalogue and this time the Perdomo Legacy Connecticut Robusto. I noticed a QR code on the plastic wrapper once scanned it takes you to the Perdomo website where you can view the cigar you’ve purchased and shows you the range and the tasting notes for the cigar! This is quite neat a clever idea for sure. The usually massive Perdomo band dominates most of this cigar. The wrapper is a light brown and toothy in places. The cold draw yields a slight barnyard note. It’s wide open which makes the draw very pleasant. Upon the light I get some creamy, woody, to***co and fruit notes. There’s a hint of spice. The second third is more of the same. It’s not overly complex and there’s not much development. The cigar perks up slightly in the final third the creaminess becomes almost buttery the strength goes to a fuller medium. This cigar is Ok but it doesn’t blow me away.

Some ci**rs make an impression before you even light them. The VegaFina Year of the Horse is one of those. It caught my eye in a cigar shop in Paris with the gold foil and horse’s tail cap! This is a big boy and it is beautifully presented with an additional red band with a prancing gold horse. This cigar has a real presence in the hand and it needs some time set aside to enjoy it.
This is the first VegaFina I have had, and this limited edition delivers a smooth smoke from start to finish. Creamy cedar, a slight berry note, roasted almonds lead the way, with subtle cocoa and espresso notes building as it settles in. This cigar is very pleasant; the burn line is on point. For €14, this is a solid stick.

How do you follow from a 21-year-old Monte number 2? Well, I decided it needed a big gun, and I reached for the biggest gun in my humidor, the Andalusian Bull. There’s been a lot of hype around this cigar, but is it justified? First off, this cigar looks incredible; it’s huge! The green, black, and gold bands are very appealing. I lit the cigar and was immediately greeted by a smoked hickory note off the bat, almost like smoked bacon. I also got saffron notes. What a start this is; delicious and different to anything I’ve smoked before. The first third is creamy with a mix of savoury and sweetness. As the cigar progresses, I get a candied orange note that led into a toasted almond and sweet marzipan note. There are some nuances of pepper that come and go. I can detect chocolate, salt, some maltiness, some caramel, and some lingering hickory. The draw is wide open, and smoke is abundant. It’s firmly in the medium category until the final third, where it goes to a medium full. The notes change to a meaty, woody, leathery, earthy, and pepper crescendo. Wow, this is an incredible cigar, and the hype is justified. This might just be my favourite new-world cigar. A dear friend and colleague and I immediately sourced a box of these.

Something a bit special at the weekend a 21 year old Montecristo! The box date of these ci**rs was July 2005! Quite apt we should smoke them on their birthday! One of our group was only 7 when these were rolled! It was a treat to see the old Montecristo band. The light revealed an almost mushroom note to start coupled with a lovely saltiness that was delightful. As the cigar progressed to the second third I started to get a creamy, woody espresso notes. Age has mellowed this cigar sitting at the medium mark until the final third when it touches familiar Monte strength. The familiar cocoa and and leather notes synonymous with the number 2 come through. I smoked it all the way to the nub and employed a cocktail stick to savour every last bit. A lovely experience. Whilst we were chatting about the age on these Montecristo I realised that I had my first cigar way back in 2005 and it was a Montecristo No.2. It had come full circle.

Part 2 of the Warsaw trip and what was indeed actually Part 1 our taxi dropped us off near to our accommodation right outside Bar & Books it was fate! I had been to the Bar and Books in New York and had a wonderful time this one was no exception. I loved the decor and the cocktails and it had the best lamp I think I’ve ever seen (scroll along to the last picture) we decided on the Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure Especial and paired it with the old favourite amaretto sours. The cigar delivered a creamy cedar, toasted bread, and a touch of honey sweetness. As it settled in The woodiness intensified and notes of roasted nuts, light earth, and a subtle white pepper spice developed. The final third brought a little more richness the earthiness and a cocoa note really shone through.
Good to see the cigar scene in Warsaw and Poland is thriving!
