I bought a box of St Luis Rey La Cuna last year, in Milan, with a friend and we have been eagerly anticipating trying the first one! We decided to crack into the box at Soho whisky club. Unfortunately we both had different experiences! First off I love the look and the size of the cigar it just feels elegant in the hand. Flavour wise this is incredible I got a delicious salty twang and herbaceous notes and pine it was reminiscent of a forest! The creamy saltiness sticks around throughout the cigar I got the odd hint of sweetness and berry too. This is a mild strength to start with and only really picks up to a medium at the end when a woody note takes over. Now to the demerits I was constantly having to relight the cigar I know I was talking a lot but this was more than that I had to really pull on this cigar to keep it going maybe slightly plugged but I was getting a lot of smoke from it. I removed the band and the cigar started to expand outwards. This is a shame as the flavours were delicious but it definitely impacted on the enjoyment of the cigar. My friend had the complete opposite experience and his smoked wonderfully well. We’ve agreed to have one each year so I’m hoping next years one has better construction cos I have a feeling this could be an absolute banger of a cigar.

I headed to Soho Whisky club with some dear friends and colleagues for an afternoon of whisky and ci**rs. I kicked off proceedings with a Davidoff Dominicana. This cigar is entirely made from to***co from the 2014 harvest! I picked this cigar up last year in the South of France and have been itching to try it ever since. I took the yellowed cellophane off and it revealed a beautifully oily wrapper with a brown reddish hue. It has a sort of compressed pig tail and 3 bands including the foot. The cut revealed a cold draw of malt, musky earth and a brown bread. I was definitely looking forward to this one. The light reveals a smooth yet strong rich flavour profile of creamy, leather, dark chocolate, earthy to***co notes what a start! The cigar progresses to a similar note with some cedar, cinnamon spice and coffee bean chucked in for good measure. It hints at pepper but not strong. The burn line was, as you’d expect with a Davidoff, razor sharp the construction impeccable. The flavour smooth yet strong, deep and rich. I think it would go well after a steak! This is a must try if you can find it!

I’ve been loving this weather recently and enjoying my evenings in the garden with a cigar in hand. Tonight’s offering was a Sancho Panzer Beliscoso. I think this is my first SP and I’ve heard some good things. The cigar itself has a lovely toothy brown wrapper with a simple understated band. The light brings a lovely sweet hay some vanilla cream and woody notes there’s a lovely saltiness that plays wonderfully with the sweetness of this cigar. There’s some woodiness, to***co and cashew nut notes in the second third there’s an almost salted caramel to it but not quite as sweet. The woodiness gets bolder in the final third and maybe a biscuit note too. It paired wonderfully with a crisp cider over ice. This is not a flashy look at me stick but is just a good solid cigar.

I first had the Meerapfel La Estancia Exclusiva 50 last year and very much enjoyed it this one has had a year or so to age in the humidor and after a stroll along the Thames it seemed like a delightful way to cap off the day. I got some lovely creamy cedar, nutty, some vanilla, latte coffee and hay and a stone fruit. This is a light to medium cigar I picked up a little bit of spice as the cigar progressed. The burn line on this was a bit all over the place at the start but was fine after a touch up. The cigar is subtle and refined plenty of flavour but not in your face. Well worth a try.

A year ago I celebrated my beloved Tottenham Hotspur win the UEFA Cup with a Trinidad Esmerelda. This year I celebrated them avoiding relegation! It’s always a rollercoaster with this team! It felt apt to crack open another Trinidad, this time the, Vigia. I make no secret I love Trinidad’s and this Vigia was no exception. The wrapper had a lovely golden brown hue. I cut the pig tail cap off and was delighted by the wide open malty earthy cold draw. I couldn’t wait to light this one. I was greeted by oodles of creamy smoke the notes were almond, dough, earthy truffle and an oakiness. There’s a herbal saltiness that is quite divine. The cigar is so smooth and pairs with the champagne wonderfully. Moving on to the second third and I get a toffee sweetness a rich coffee, some cinnamon and light white pepper. This is delicious I take my time and savour every opulent t**e. The final third and the oakiness ramps up I get a mineral note and the baking spice, pepper combination end this cigar delightfully. It isn’t as good as the Esme but it’s wholly enjoyable in its own right.

I was gifted a Guatabey Cervantes by a dear friend and it has been in the humidor for a few months. I can find limited information on Gautabey. I’m led to believe it’s a non Habanos Cuban cigar and is a relatively new brand. The cigar wrapper looks very rustic but I do like the band with its red black and gold embossing. It’s a fairly nice size but the cigar did feel a bit under-filled on one side. The light provided some lovely hay cedar and a salty twang. After about half an inch the ash started to dog leg, possibly due to being slightly under-filled, it became a bit of a fight to keep it going. I didn’t need to relight but had to suck to bring it back several times. It canoed quite badly and i eventually corrected this with my lighter. After this the cigar did settle and burn better, this is where the cigar had felt more firmer pre light so definitely a construction issue. I got more creamy, slight vanilla, woody, hay notes with maybe a hint of coffee. The band was a bit tricky to remove and there was some damage to the wrapper. Overall flavour was nice just some construction issues which mark it down.
