Tuesday Sales Tips

If you're in the UK, you can't have failed to notice what a beautiful spring we are having. After a dreary January and February and March, wow it is wonderful to see the sun (this was photo was taken on a trip to London a couple of weeks ago).

And what do gardeners do in Spring?

The sow, they nurture, they carefully watch their baby plants. Not because they expect results today or tomorrow, but because they are planning for the future.

Your sales pipeline is like that.

โœ…If you don't sow seeds, nothing will grow (prospecting)

โœ…If you don't nurture, little plants may fail to develop (that's easy because that's nurturing too)

โœ…If you don't watch out for pests, or water during times of drought, plants will die (that's follow up, failing to look after your prospect and preventing competitors gaining a foothold)

And if you do all of that, you will be rewarded with a harvest of flowers, fruit and vegetables (you get the sale)

Sometimes sales is simple. So if you haven't sown anything for a while, maybe now is the time!

Happy Selling!

Most business owners were never actually taught how to sell.

Theyโ€™ve built great services, put in the work, and then found themselves โ€œfiguring out sales as they goโ€.

Which usually means a mix of second-guessing, underpricing, or avoiding certain conversations altogether.

The reality is, sales isnโ€™t about being pushy or scripted.

Review of February

It is important to look back and reflect on your last month before you dive into the next one. So here is my review of February:

โœ… In October I started a major new contract, so I'm settling down into the flow with that one - it is a 2 year project, which is so satisfying as I will see these students learn and grow. I am enjoying the consistency of working with the same people regularly - so often, as a trainer, I never get to see the delegates ever again, so this is wonderful

โœ… I'm really drilling down into networking - I am a member of BNI, The Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and I have attended a few ad-hoc events locally, as well as a couple on line.

โŒ .... and the major reason for this is that, despite LinkedIn delivering about 70% of my business (consistently) over the last 12 years or so, the beast is changing! The rich conversations are vanishing and it is beginning to feel like a slave to money on here. I never forget that, as an income stream, I could lose it all (get hacked, get kicked off the platform) so I'm drilling down hard into networking, relationship building and referrals.

โœ… I was asked to deliver a talk at one of these networking events 'Why Gen Zs don't like using the phone'. This one is proving very popular!

โœ… Had a huge revamp of my corporate values. They weren't bad before, but they didn't really reflect what I was trying to achieve. I also used these for the basis of a series of posts. They seem to have landed well with my demographic and I feel happy that they are strong.

โŒ Had an unsettling moment when I wrote a post about a real customer (and the problem that brought me in to work with them). Then separately someone from a different company got in touch and said it wasn't particularly pleasant to write about a member of their team! Case studies have huge power, but it is a balancing act and I felt bad that this post landed wrong. I am going to be a bit more careful in the future.

โœ… As a team, we are looking at the whole customer journey with Adaptive Sales Group. I want to make it a lot more straightforward to work with us. Lots of research and thinking time has been happening

โœ… I have also spent time on self-development - I live walking distance from the new Google Data Centre in Cheshunt and they delivered a terrific session on AI at the local Theobalds Enterprise Centre. As an added bonus I met some old friends from my networking days in Enfield.

So February has been very good. Great clients and a chance to put in some strategic building blocks.

Can't wait for March!

What have been the highlights of your February?

This post is for anyone who has ever felt small.

Recently, an influential businessman heard my one-minute pitch at a networking event. He came over afterwards and told me that he is friends with the head of a very well known sales training company.

They rank highly on SEO, they are large and have tons of brand recognition.

For a split second, I felt tiny.

Driving home, feeling a bit sorry for myself, I realised something important.

Influence is not endorsement.

Someone referencing a bigger name is not saying you are smaller - it just means they are operating from their own point of view.

Some people measure credibility by:

โ€ข Size
โ€ข Status
โ€ข Search rankings
โ€ข Brand awareness

But clients DON'T buy status. They couldn't care less!!!

They buy outcomes. THAT is what I'm good at.

My clients buy:

โ€ข Confidence in conversations that used to scare them
โ€ข Revenue growth that changes their business trajectory
โ€ข Skills that make their teams feel capable rather than awkward
โ€ข Results they can see and measure

A large organisation can dominate Google. But it doesn't mean they are any good - it just means they can chuck more money at it. And once I got my brain functioning again, from a place of logic, these guys don't get particularly good reviews either. Lightbulb moment!

So if you ever find yourself shrinking because someone mentions a bigger name, pause.

Ask yourself:
Am I competing on status, or am I competing on results?

Because I'll tell you something huge - I'll compete on results any day of the week, because I will win.

------

To finish, a little quote which I love:

"If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito in the room."

Happy selling!

This is me last Friday, doing my thing, delivering a short presentation to my networking colleagues at BNI.

But presenting is a thing that so many people struggle with.

Online, you can practice, curate, record, re-record until it's perfect. But live?

For some people it's the live element that is so tough - especially for Gen Zs and some Millennials.

So how do you cope if a customer asks for a demo? Or have to give a presentation to the board, or to stakeholders who may give you the go ahead?

The good news: It's a skill. So it can be learned. But if your sales team aren't confident doing it, that might mean you are losing deals you should be winning.

Let's chat.

Do you hate 'noise-driven selling'?

Because there is plenty of it on here!!!

How can you tell?

Well, it's flashy, high energy, a triumph of style over substance, a place where claims are huge, but not backed up by anything as substantial as proof. So don't go looking too deep, because all you'll find is hot air, a sense of disappointment and a lighter bank balance.

So I believe integrity will always beat hype. I can do the flashy claims if you want, but I have the confidence to understand what you want and need, and a 'word-vomit' of my own gloriousness certainly ain't it!

So instead, I'm the sort of sales trainer who will behave with integrity, you'll know exactly what you're getting - what I will do and what I won't. You'll get honesty, substance, credibility and results.

And I will never ever, dress up an old idea as something new and sell it to you as something revolutionary.

No exaggeration, no hype, just results.

See, life can actually be beautifully simple!

Have you ever been burned?
