Museumy day out on Monday with to the Horniman Museum to see (and do!) the Octonauts activity trail we recently designed, accompanying their Voyage to the Deep exhibition. Then to the Young V&A for the Inside Aardman exhibition, where I'd drawn some of Aardman's sketches on the walls in January. An excellent exhibition and insight into their painstaking animation process. I particularly enjoyed seeing the sets, and early sketches of Wallace and Gromit while they were still finding their character. Highly recommend!

Brownsea Island reopens to the public tomorrow, and it's been busy behind the scenes this winter... I'm excited to share how Dorset Wildlife Trust's Wildlife & Wetland Centre now looks after a revamp, with new interpretation throughout the centre. It's been great to get stuck into designing for this space - a lot of work and a real team effort. Hope you enjoy it if you go :)

🌡My winter greetings card design this year depicts a dove of peace with symbols of Palestinian heritage, resilience and resistance: olive, watermelon, poppies, thyme and sabar cactus, painted in vibrant inks, and finished with gold dotty stars.

A series of illustrations I did for as postcards to go out with their lovely seed packs. I meant to post these at the time (last year). I have a backlog of work to share - this is my first foray back into posting in here, but I'm still working behind the scenes and have updated my website a little instead...

Better late than never! First post this year, and I just missed Mary Anning's 225th birthday. I've been meaning to post for ages so this feels a good opportunity to. Here's an illustration commissioned me to do of Mary last summer and it now adorns tea towels, mugs and pins in their shop. Tricky working from reference as only one portrait exists of her...
I'm looking forward to seeing the new film about the great woman coming out soon ☺️

6. COMET

Billy had run inside to tell his mum about the starlings trapped in the greenhouse and how they'd flown out together in a huge flock. She'd smiled and said she'd take him tomorrow to see them again, but this time out in the open. Billy wondered what she could mean, how would they ever find them again?Β

When it was nearly dusk they went down to the river and waited. Suddenly, as the sky turned beautiful colours, five starlings, then twenty, then a hundred, then thousands, gathered to dance together like a moving cloud in the sky, dashing like a comet, changing into lots of different shapes. It was magical. Mum said this was a 'murmuration' and that the starlings came here every winter and put on a wonderful show...

That's a wrap on 's Once Upon A Winter series for this year! Thank you for following along and for your encouragement while I continue to develop my illustrations. I am very grateful for your support! I really enjoy getting into these illustration prompt challenges and hope to do more next year.

Wishing you all a peaceful and joyful festive time, as incongruous as it feels right now in the world, let us count our blessings and hope that PEACE is the word (and the action) for 2024 βœ¨πŸ€πŸ•ŠοΈ

5. SONG

Billy turned the key in the greenhouse door. No sooner had he prized it open from its frosty, rusty hinges, than out burst a shimmering flock of starlings, chattering and singing for their freedom in a deafening song as the night sky engulfed them. The little robin's mission to release the trapped birds was complete. After all, no-one is too small to make a difference...

4. Glasshouse

Billy grabbed his hat and scarf and headed out into the frosty garden, taking the key and a torch with him. The robin flew before him, heading straight for the greenhouse. Billy wondered what she could possibly be leading him to...

3. KEY

Billy followed the robin as she flew through the kitchen towards the back door. She hovered at the key rack and picked out the key to the greenhouse. But what was she trying to tell him? The little robin certainly seemed to want Billy to understand something urgently...

2. FROST

Once they'd let the robin in, she flew straight through the house to the back window. Billy drew back the curtain and the robin hovered at the window, tap-tap-tapping on the glass. What was she trying to tell them, as she tapped so much? Billy wiped the window, looking out across the frost covered garden. It had been a harsh winter and the garden had looked like a twinkling wonderland for weeks.
