You are good at your job.
That was never the question.
But somewhere between the targets, the commute, and the childcare that only exists so you can go and earn, the maths gets quietly frustrating. You keep less than it feels like you should.
Most people are not looking to walk away from their career.
They just want something of their own on the side. A second thing. A bit more control, a bit more headroom.
That is what I am building, around everything else, not instead of it.

25 years in corporate.

Infrastructure architecture. Customer success. Programme management.

Big firms. Bigger titles. Bigger salaries.
Then the things they don’t put in your LinkedIn About section.

The divorce.
The debt.
The redundancy.
All inside 18 months.

The corporate version of me was the foundation. I’m grateful for it. It paid the mortgage. It paid the school fees. It built the discipline I rely on now.
But it nearly broke me.

The breaking point wasn’t dramatic. It was a destination meeting. Good money. Front row. And I felt nothing.

That was the moment I knew the next phase wasn’t a promotion. It was a rebuild.

Something I’m relearning this week.
Therapy looks backward. Names the wound. Walks you through what happened.
Useful. Sometimes essential.
But it’s not the whole job.
The other half is forward. Being here. In your actual life. Building the next chapter.
Treating the wound is one thing. Living after it is another.

After the divorce I made a decision.

I would never trade time with my daughters for money again.

But I was doing exactly that.

Every. Single. Day.

Sat at a desk pretending to be present.
Picking up my phone at bedtime.
Working the late call instead of being there for the bath.

Telling myself it was for them.
When really it was for the version of me who didn’t know how to stop.

Therapy didn’t fix me. It explained me.
For years I thought who I was being was just who I was. Anxious. Resentful. Quietly miserable in a life that looked right on paper.
Therapy gave me the why. It showed me who I was and why I was the way I was. The patterns weren’t me. They were patterns I’d lived in for so long I’d mistaken them for identity.
But understanding why I was stuck didn’t get me unstuck.
Coaching did the next layer. It changed the language. Out went “I don’t want this” and “I don’t want that.” In came “I do want this.” Clear direction. Specific destination.
Then personal development took over. The daily reps. The repetition that cements the rewiring. Conscious in the morning. Subconscious overnight. Some of what’s in these headphones is on while I sleep.
Three layers. Each doing different work. None replacing the others.
But this isn’t a staircase. It’s not therapy then coaching then personal development then sorted. It’s a loop. There are times I’ll need to go back to therapy. Times the coaching needs revisiting because I’ve changed and the destination has too. The daily work never stops because I never stop.
That’s the actual truth of it.
Therapy treats the wound.
Coaching points the direction.
Mental fitness builds the daily habit that holds it all up.
You don’t finish.
