Are you a bluebell?

The sun was shining, no coats were needed and I learned something new at our local National Trust at the weekend. 💚

Did you know that Bluebells take 5-7 years to flower once the seeds have germinated?

They also take years to grow back if they are trodden on, as their leaves can't photosynthesise!

So, it made me reflect on the parallels between bluebells and humans.

Can we see our beauty and offer ourselves time and patience to blossom?

If you've ever experienced being metaphorically trodden on, it can take time to heal and process what's happened. So often, we put pressure on ourselves to "just get over it!", but what if we could offer ourselves the curiosity and patience that we have towards nature?

It can take time to work through the emotional impact that events, situations and circumstances in our lives have had or are having on us.

So, becoming aware of when we become self-critical and perhaps offering the same qualities to ourselves that we offer to nature, of curiosity and patience. That way, we might begin to appreciate ourselves more.

Taking good care of yourself and going gently.

What can sometimes feel like a big step can also be the best step.

Speaking with someone for the first time can be nerve wracking and you might not know what to expect.

You might find that sitting with a counsellor can bring relief and comfort from being listened to and really heard.

Finding the right counsellor for you is important. Sometimes, you might feel comfortable or at ease straight away.

On the other hand, it may take some time to get used to the counsellor and the counselling space.

It may take a few appointments with different counsellors to get a feeling for how they work and to understand what it is you're looking for.

It's such an individual decision and choice and it's OK to take your time in deciding.

Counselling doesn't only have to be when you reach a point of crisis and feeling lost, it can be useful to explore all kinds of dilemmas in life; relationships, issues at work, feelings of anxiety, low mood and grief, as well as working through generational and historical trauma.

And sometimes, you might not know exactly what you need to talk about but you know that you don't feel quite right.

Life can be tough at times. You don't have to go it alone.

This honestly is my favourite time of year. Well, when we have blue skies and sunny days!

But when people experience low mood, it's not always easy to view Spring as a positive time of year.

Spring can lead some people to question why they are not feeling better, especially when it feels like others are getting out and about more and doing more things.
It can be easy to judge ourselves if we are not experiencing a substantial change in our mood - The sun doesn't have the same effect on everyone.
What we can do though, is to notice this and to pay gentle attention to how we do feel, offering ourselves some care and kindness.
This may look different for each of us and so exploring and experimenting with what feels good (even on what feels like a bad day) can really help to motivate us, especially if we are feeling unmotivated.

Inviting you to go gently and to offer yourself some care and kindness.

If things feel heavy and dark, it can be useful to remember that even if it's a dark cloud and stormy day, there is light and sunshine above the clouds!

Taking good care of yourself whilst the darkness is present, watching it change (it doesn't tend to stay the same, even if it feels like it!) - perhaps bringing gentle curiosity to your experience, asking yourself what it looks and noticing where in the body you sense the feelings.
Emotions come and go. They change. If we become aware of them changing, we can begin to see the glimmers of sunlight.

If we look close enough, we can see the joy even on the darkest days.

Taking good care of yourself and reaching out for support.

Midday practice check-in!

If you haven't already done so, an invitation to gently check in with yourself by pausing and asking yourself "How am I today?", "How am I, right now?"

Perhaps follow this with "What do I need?"
This might be as simple as stepping away from the computer for a few minutes,
Making yourself a drink,
Pausing and taking a few breaths,
Or, doing nothing for a few moments before continuing with your day...

Taking good care of yourself.

Inviting you to go gently with yourself this weekend. To start where you are and go from there!

I am attending an online 'self-compassion for difficult emotions' retreat this weekend. It feels a bit of a luxury even though it's part of my Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

I am hoping to restart teaching Mindfulness courses and workshops again soon alongside my counselling practice, so it's a great opportunity to take some time for me to refresh and reset! 🧘🏼‍♀️

A big part of self-compassion is listening and bringing awareness to what we need in each moment.

People misunderstand and think that mindfulness is about breathing.

Mindfulness training is learning to look within ourselves and to be with our experiences, whether pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, with acceptance and non-judgement (in other words, offering ourselves kindness).

During a mindfulness meditation practice, we may be invited to focus gently on the breath in the body, but it's not about the breathing. You don't have to count, you don't have to breathe deeply or change anything. We invite an awareness of what's here, right now.

Whilst resting gently with the body, we may begin to notice the body breathing all by itself and we can invite an openness to appreciate how incredible our bodies are, in the fact that the body breathes all by itself.

During mindfulness meditations, we can also invite an awareness of sounds, body sensations, thoughts and emotions, if that feels OK.

When we become the observer of our inner experiences, we can become less attached to and reactive of our emotions.

You are loved and important and you bring to this world things no one else can. So hold on." ❤️

When considering counselling, you may find yourself feeling unsure of what to expect from a counsellor.

Sometimes, you will know immediately when you meet them that they are the right counsellor for you. Other times, it may take a few session to get a feel for how they work and if this suits you needs. It may be that they are not the right person for you and that you would like to try a different counsellor.

Whatever your experience, remembering that the relationship with your counsellor is possibly one of, if not the most important element of counselling.

A counsellor will offer you openness, collaboration, warmth, non-judgement, confidentiality and honesty when you are working with them.

Finding a counsellor who you can relate to and feel able to be open and honest with will help you get more from counselling.

It might be that you wish to work with a counsellor of a particular gender, sexuality, age etc. There are many of us around with different experience, qualifications, styles and qualities. It is worth doing your homework to find the right counsellor for you.

Mindfulness meditation isn't about breathing. It's about bringing awareness to our whole experience.

Anxiety can be exhausting and debilitating - Mindfulness meditation offers us time and space to notice what's happening for us in the mind and body, giving space to calm the mind and body and to decide how to respond rather than reacting from a place of worry, fear or a need to control.

Uncertainty can be a cause of stress and anxiety. Knowing how to self-regulate during times of uncertainty can help us to feel more in control and more grounded.

Stress can show up in a variety of different ways.

We can sometimes experience strange and confusing thoughts, feelings and body sensations that don't make any logical sense.

When we begin to notice and pay gentle attention to what's happening within ourselves in relation to what's happening in our lives, we can then make conscious choices about what actions to take and not take.

Learning to be with ourselves in a gentle way can help to cultivate a different kind of relationship with ourselves.

Whether we call it self-compassion, kindness or friendliness, it becomes about taking good care of ourselves and knowing perhaps when to push and when to pause.

Distractions can be useful at times, but if we remain continuously distracted and running on autopilot, we can miss key signals and signs that we perhaps need to do something differently.
