Spooky season is upon us, and some of the scariest things are lurking in small business admin!

🕸️ An inbox with 10,000+ unread emails
🕸️ A 'filing system' that has a folder called STUFF
🕸️ Every password saved in a note called… 'passwords' 😱
🕸️ Invoices sent from three different mailboxes
🕸️ A to-do list with an item dated 2019
🕸️ A social media account whose last post says 'Big things coming soon!'

When you're busy running a business, it's easy for the admin, marketing and all those little jobs to pile up. And before you know it, tackling them feels scarier than leaving them alone! Luckily, most of these things are easier to sort than you might think. Sometimes you just need an extra pair of hands to get everything back on track.

It’s Own Business Day, so it feels like a good time to share how TAAB actually started.

It was the middle of the night, and I couldn’t sleep. I’d recently been made redundant after 18 years working across marketing and operations, and my brain was doing that very helpful thing where it decides 2am is the perfect time to think about absolutely everything. So I got up, found a piece of paper and started writing.

What was I good at?
What did I actually enjoy doing?
What could I offer?
Who did I want to work with?
And what did I want work to look like for me and my family?

By the time I’d finished, that one piece of paper had the beginnings of a business on it. That business became TAAB. A lot has changed since that night. Services have developed, and I’ve learnt a lot about running a business along the way. But when I look at what TAAB is today, supporting small businesses with their operations and marketing, giving business owners more time and helping things run that little bit more smoothly - it’s actually pretty close to what I scribbled down on that piece of paper.

Most people probably assume TAAB is just a name I came up with for the business. But there’s actually a bit more to it.

Officially, TAAB stands for Time and Assistance for Ambitious Businesses. But the letters are also my family’s initials, which is the part that means the most to me.

When I started TAAB in 2024, I wanted to build a business that worked around family life. Something that gave me the flexibility I needed, while using the experience I’d built up over the years to support other small businesses. And really, that’s still what TAAB is about.

Whether I’m sorting out the admin that’s been sitting on someone’s list for weeks, getting some structure behind their marketing, organising their systems, or simply taking a few things off their plate, it all comes back to giving business owners a bit more time and headspace.

So yes, TAAB is a business name. But it’s also a little reminder of why I started it in the first place.

It's National Work Life Week, so let's talk about the admin that quietly eats your evenings.

Not the big stuff. The little 'I'll just quickly…' jobs.

5 signs your admin has moved into your evenings:

1. You answer emails from the sofa 'so tomorrow's easier' (it never is)
2. Invoices are waiting for a 'quiet moment' to be sent
3. Your to-do list lives across three notebooks, your phone and the back of an envelope
4. Sunday night is spent working out what's happening on Monday
5. Your social media goes quiet whenever you get busy

Ticked two or more? You're not disorganised; you're doing the job of three people.

The fix usually isn't working harder. It's getting the right systems in place and handing over the bits that don't need you.

I’m definitely someone who works better when my desk feels organised, and everything is where it should be. And actually, I think the same applies behind the scenes in a business. When you know where things are, what needs doing and what’s coming up, everything just feels that little bit easier to manage. It doesn’t need to be a complicated system or the latest bit of software. Sometimes it’s just about having a way of working that makes sense to you.

Hello October! Although apparently only between the hours of 7am and 10am, because by lunchtime it still feels like summer. 😂

It’s been a little while since I’ve properly introduced myself on here, so hello (or hello again!). I’m Amy, the person behind TAAB.

I work with small businesses across two main areas - business operations and marketing. That's usually becoming an extra pair of hands, someone to bounce ideas with and someone to help keep everything moving.

And if you’ve been following TAAB for a while, hello again. There are lots of familiar faces on here, as well as plenty of new ones, so it felt like a good time to reintroduce myself.

What if your next customer never searched Google?

It might sound a bit far-fetched, but it's already happening. More and more people are asking AI tools like ChatGPT for recommendations, advice and answers instead of heading straight to Google. It's quick, it's easy, and for many people it's becoming their first stop.

Where does that leave your business? The fundamentals of good marketing haven't changed. People are still looking for businesses they can trust. The difference is how they're finding them.

At the weekend, I spotted an advert on a train, which caught my attention, and it got me thinking.

We spend so much time talking about social media, websites and email marketing that sometimes we forget there are other ways to get in front of people too.

When someone is sitting on a train, waiting at a bus stop, or travelling on public transport, they're a captive audience.

They can't simply scroll past.
They can't click away.
They've got time to look, read and take it in.

That's why traditional advertising still has a place in your marketing mix.

Of course, digital marketing is incredibly powerful, but the best marketing isn't always about choosing one channel over another. It's about thinking about where your customers actually spend their time and making sure you're showing up there.

Sometimes the opportunities are right in front of us.
