ADHD & Motherhood - Part 3 🧠🩷

We’ve talked about the challenges of being a mum with ADHD, but what about the positives?!

Because whilst parenting with an ADHD brain can be bloody hard, there are also some pretty incredible strengths that come with it. And I think we need to talk about those more 🩷

So… ADHD motherhood in a nutshell 🤪

The NCT WhatsApp group? Overwhelming. Muted it. Archived it. Eventually got removed 😬

Need to get myself and the kids ready? Absolutely. But first, my best friend needs her daily 10-minute unsolicited voice note about absolutely bloody nothing.

Baby bottles need washing? Yep. But I’ve just opened the cutlery drawer and apparently reorganising that is now a matter of urgency.

BUT...

Creating an entire motherhood business during maternity leave? Filming and editing 48 videos, building a course from scratch and putting myself out there on Instagram multiple times a week to help other mums feel seen?

Yeah, apparently my brain thought that was absolutely fine 🤣

And honestly, that sums up my ADHD brain perfectly.

Because when something matters to me, I care with absolutely everything I’ve got. And helping mums feel seen, supported and less alone? That’s something I’ll never stop being passionate about 🩷

ADHD motherhood can be chaotic and overwhelming, but there are some pretty bloody brilliant bits too - I see it as my superpower šŸ¦øšŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

And it’s about time we celebrated šŸŽ‰

Which of these made you think, ā€œOMG, that’s meā€?! šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

Can you grieve your old life whilst being incredibly grateful for your new one? 🩷

Abso-bloody-lutely! And I think it’s something we need to talk about more.

Because becoming a mum is beautiful, but it’s also one of the biggest identity shifts we’ll ever experience.

And sometimes, alongside all that love and happiness, there’s a sense of loss too.

🩷 Shock
🩷 Denial
🩷 Anger
🩷 Bargaining
🩷 Guilt
🩷 Depression
🩷 Acceptance

These aren’t stages we move through in order. We can bounce between them, experience several at once, or not relate to some at all.

And that’s okay.

You can miss your freedom, your independence, your old body, your career, your relationships or simply the person you used to be.

It doesn’t mean you love your children any less šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Motherhood can be full of gratitude AND grief. Both can co-exist.

So, I’m curious… which stage resonates with you most right now? 😘

There’s a cost to becoming a mother… that you don’t see on a payslip šŸ’°

I’ve heardĀ partners saying, ā€œBut I’m the one paying the billsā€Ā from SO many mums. I’ve heard it in my own relationship too.

But when one parent takes maternity leave, reduces their hours, pauses their career, carries more of the childcare and becomes the default parent… that IS a financial contribution to the family. It just doesn’t arrive in the bank account.

This isn’t about who works harder. It’s about recognising that raising a family requiresĀ paid work AND unpaid work… one is just easier to put a Ā£ sign in front of!

Your contribution to your family is not defined by your payslip šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Motherhood + ADHD 🧠 Part 2

(See Part 1 first if you missed it!)

Motherhood is basically anĀ ADHD brain’s sensory Olympics 😬

Noise. Touch. Mess. Broken sleep. Constant interruptions. 73 things to remember at once… 🫠

Yes, these are things every mum can struggle with. But for an ADHD brain, constant sensory load and demand on executive function can push an already busy brain into overload - FAST 🤯

Once I understoodĀ WHY my ADHD brain found motherhood so overstimulating, I stopped trying to cope better and started working WITH it.

The 5 things that helped me most:
🧠 Understand your ADHD (& explain to your partner!)ā€ØšŸ”Š Reduce sensory inputā€ØāœšŸ¼Ā Write EVERYTHING down (a shared calendar is a non-negotiable)ā€ØšŸŒæĀ Move + get outsideā€ØšŸ•°ļø Create routine + predictability

And remember: struggling with parts of motherhood AND being a bloody brilliant mum can co-exist 🩷

Baby is finally down for a nap and you can’t decide whether to sleep, wash your hair, clean the house, make food or do something for yourself 🤪

Mums suddenly become SO productive during this 30min-2hour window (never know how long you’ve got 🫠).

What’s your nap time priority? šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

Okay, can we talk about LUCK in motherhood?

We want to believe that if we prepare enough, research enough, try hard enough and love hard enough, we’ll surely ā€˜nail it’ and get the motherhood experience we dreamed of.

But motherhood doesn’t work like that.

You didn’t choose your fertility journey.
You didn’t choose how your birth went.
You didn’t choose whether your baby would have reflux, allergies or feeding difficulties.
You didn’t choose how easily they would sleep.
You didn’t choose their temperament.
You didn’t choose their health.
You didn’t choose the village around you.
And you can’t always choose your financial situation.

There IS luck in motherhood.

And admitting that can feel uncomfortable and shouldn’t put shade on anyone else’s experience.

It just means that if you ARE struggling, it isn’t proof you’re doing something wrong.

Sometimes you’ve simply hadĀ it harder.

So next time you catch yourself wondering why another mum seems to be coping better, remember… you’re seeing how she’s coping - not everything she’s coping with šŸ«¶šŸ¼

Save this for when comparison creeps in.

And tell me what I missedĀ šŸ‘‡šŸ¼
