FRAMEWORK READINESS FRIDAY!

Are you preparing for frameworks that haven't even been published yet?

Many contractors wait until the tender lands before thinking about frameworks. The most successful businesses are usually preparing months beforehand. Right now, we're seeing significant activity around future construction, infrastructure, defence and public sector frameworks. For SMEs working in water, civils, nuclear or infrastructure, these opportunities can shape workloads for years.

The challenge?

By the time the framework is published, there's often a scramble to update policies, refresh case studies, strengthen social value evidence and fill gaps in bid libraries. That's why framework readiness is becoming just as important as bid writing itself.

If you knew a major framework was likely to be released within the next 6-12 months, what would you be doing differently today?

Behind the Bid #4: What Evaluators Want to See in Construction Methodologies

We present the fourth post in our series of posts entitled: Behind the Bid: The Essentials of Winning Work.

Construction Methodologies are often among the most heavily weighted technical questions in a specialist construction tender.

Yet many responses focus exclusively on what will be done, rather than why the proposed approach is the right one.

From an evaluator's perspective, a methodology provides insight into how well a bidder understands a project. It demonstrates planning, risk management, resource allocation and delivery capability.

As bid professionals, we don't need to be site managers or construction experts. However, we do need to understand the key principles that make a methodology compelling.

Evaluators are typically looking for clarity, practicality and confidence.

They want to see that the programme is achievable, risks have been considered, interfaces have been managed, and disruption has been minimised. They want reassurance that the bidder has thought through the challenges and developed a realistic delivery strategy.

The best methodology responses combine technical expertise with customer-focused benefits. They explain not just how works will be delivered, but how the chosen approach supports safety, quality, programme and cost certainty and stakeholder satisfaction.

A great construction methodology isn't a description of activities. It's a demonstration of delivery confidence.

Behind the Bid #3: Turning Carbon Reduction into Competitive Advantage

Welcome to out third post in this series of posts entitled: Behind the Bid: The Essentials of Winning Work.

Today we're discussing Carbon Reduction. This has evolved from a niche consideration into a mainstream procurement requirement.

Across public and private sectors, clients are seeking partners that can support their environmental ambitions and contribute towards net zero goals. For bid professionals, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity.

The challenge is translating technical environmental initiatives into language that resonates with evaluators. The opportunity is demonstrating that sustainability isn't just a corporate commitment, but a genuine delivery strength.

Many organisations have Carbon Reduction Plans that include measuring and demonstrating annual reduction against a baseline year. Clearly articulating how those plans influence day-to-day operations, project delivery and decision-making will get you extra points.

The strongest responses move beyond emissions reporting and net zero targets. They explain the practical actions being taken, whether that's reducing transport emissions, introducing alternative fuels and propulsion systems, improving resource efficiency or investing in low-carbon technologies.

Clients want evidence that commitments are achievable and embedded within business operations.

When communicated effectively, carbon reduction becomes more than a compliance exercise. It becomes proof of innovation, efficiency and forward-thinking leadership.
In competitive procurement, organisations that can clearly demonstrate environmental responsibility can create a meaningful point of differentiation.

🏁 News - News - News - News - News - News

After helping clients submit more than 500 tenders, I've noticed something interesting:
Most bids don't lose because the company lacks capability.
They lose because: ❌ The opportunity wasn't qualified properly. ❌ The question wasn't fully answered. ❌ Claims weren't supported by evidence. ❌ The response wasn't written with the evaluator in mind.

That's why I'm pleased to launch my new:

Behind the Bid #2: Demonstrating Social Value Beyond the Basics

This is the second post in our series of posts entitled: Behind the Bid: The Essentials of Winning Work.

Social Value has become a fundamental part of procurement, yet many responses still focus on promises rather than outcomes.

We've all seen commitments around apprenticeships, volunteering days and local spend. While these are important, evaluators are increasingly looking beyond headline figures to understand the genuine impact an organisation will create.

From a bidding perspective, Social Value is about demonstrating how contract delivery can improve lives, strengthen communities and support economic growth. It's an opportunity to show how your organisation contributes something meaningful beyond the core scope of works.

You don't need to be a Social Value specialist to write compelling responses. What matters is understanding the difference between activity and impact. Anyone can promise a number of volunteering hours. Strong bidders explain who benefits, how success will be measured and how those initiatives align with the client's priorities and objectives.

You don't need to re-invent the wheel. There is a mechanism for all of this in the Social Value Portal and the National TOMS. If you're not a corporate, there is a Social Value portal Open Access version. Also, it pays to refer to the Social Value Act 2012 within responses, demonstrating your compliance with the act.

The most persuasive Social Value responses are specific, measurable and credible. They connect organisational strengths with community needs and demonstrate a genuine commitment to creating lasting value.

The question isn't what Social Value activities you'll deliver. It's what difference they'll make.

Behind the Bid #1: Why Quality Management Wins Points

This is the first post in our series Behind the Bid: The Essentials of Winning Work.

When reviewing tender requirements, it's easy to view Quality Management as another compliance section requiring an ISO certificate and a few process diagrams. In reality, it's one of the clearest indicators of how an organisation will perform after contract award.

Clients aren't simply looking for evidence of accreditation. They're looking for confidence. Confidence that services will be delivered consistently, that risks will be managed proactively, that mistakes will be identified and corrected, and that lessons learned will be applied to future improvements.

As Bid Writers and Bid Managers, we don't need to be Quality Managers. However, we do need to understand how quality is embedded within an organisation and, more importantly, how to articulate its value to an evaluator.

The strongest responses move beyond generic statements about procedures and audits. They tell a story about continuous improvement, customer satisfaction, performance measurement and governance. They demonstrate how quality management directly contributes to successful outcomes.

Ultimately, quality wins marks because it reduces risk and increases confidence. When evaluators can see clear evidence that an organisation is committed to delivering right first time, they're far more likely to trust that organisation with their contract.

The best bid responses don't just prove compliance. They demonstrate a culture of quality.

Behind the Bid: The Essentials of Winning Work

Do I know everything there is to know about bidding and tendering?

Would love to say yes of course, but the plain truth is that over the past 12+ years, and particularly the past five of those years, I've been on a massive learning curve, and it hasn't stopped, and it won't stop. Every project, every client, every tender document, every post on Linkedin from others - there's always something new.

Some things I've gotten really good at and that benefits my clients. So, I've decided to share some of that good stuff. Beginning Wednesday 2nd September and continuing every Wednesday for five weeks will be a series of posts on LinkedIn, facebook, and my blog page regarding the key elements of bidding, demonstrating why I can help clients win construction bids, to healthcare bids, to IT bids etc, with or without specific sector knowledge. We will explore together, the commonalities, such as Quality, Social Value, Carbon Reduction, Methodologies, and Compliance and how these can be your best competitive advantage.

I'm excited about this, so the serious writing begins.

BBM has turned blue! Not because we're cold (we're definitely not cold right now...), it's because it was time for a change, a refresh, an evolution! (no, that's a bit strong - getting carried away there).

We love our branding and our yellow B, but have decided after five years that yellow as a background colour on our website, social media, and printed materials, simply doesn't work any more. So, we've kept the yellow as an offset colour and then grounded it with a navy blue wash over everything else - and we think it looks fab!

Marketing is hugely important in this everpresent online world, so how we present ourselves needs massive consideration, now more than ever. This was one big thing that was highlighted in our Business & Marketing Plan for this year, and now we place a big tick in the right hand column. Done.

Do pop by our website to see the change and other elements that we're always updating. Don't forget we also have a blog, so, you know, check it out! And remember, BBM is all about transforming complex tenders into winning relationships!
