"What actually is cloud hosting?"
If you've ever saved a photo to iCloud or a document to Google Drive, you already understand the basic concept behind cloud hosting.
Rather than your website living on a single physical computer somewhere, cloud hosting spreads it across a network of servers. If one has a problem, another picks up the slack. Your website stays online.
It matters for a few reasons.
Reliability is the obvious one. A website hosted on a single server goes down if that server has a problem. Cloud hosting significantly reduces that risk.
Speed is the less obvious one. Cloud hosting can serve your website from a location closer to whoever is visiting it, which means pages load faster. For a potential customer on a slow rural connection in Somerset or Dorset, that can be the difference between staying and leaving.
Like most things in web development, not all cloud hosting is created equal. The right solution depends on the size of your website, the traffic you receive, and how much you're willing to spend on infrastructure.
