Stop chasing spikes. Start building a system.

In marketing you'll find it everywhere: the belief that there is just a series of "levers" you pull to get an immediate sale.

You post. You wait. Nothing happens. So you try a new tactic.

This is what we call the A–B Fallacy - the idea that you can jump from awareness straight to a sale while skipping the middle.

The middle is where trust is built.

Without it, your enquiries stay cold and price becomes the only reason anyone chooses you. If you cannot explain how today’s work helps someone trust you more tomorrow, you are just making noise.

Marketing is not a lever

You feel it everywhere; all the time: the pressure to pull a lever and get an immediate result. A post, an ad, a new button - followed by the wait for a spike in sales.

When it does not work, the assumption is usually that we picked the wrong channel or the wrong tactic. But pulling levers is transactional thinking. It reduces your business to a moment instead of a process.

In reality, every touchpoint either builds belief in what you do or erodes it. If you cannot explain how today’s activity helps someone trust you more tomorrow, it is probably just noise.We think marketing works best when it is treated like infrastructure - a blueprint that supports the whole business for the long term.

In your first few years in marketing, it is easy to get distracted by the "shiny" numbers. We call these ghosts - vanity metrics that look great in a report but don’t actually move the business forward.

If a post gets 1,000 likes but zero people click the booking link, that post hasn't done its job. It’s just noise.

At The Foundry Floor, we teach that engagement is only useful if it leads to intent. We would rather see 50 likes from local families asking about parking than 500 likes from bot accounts or people 200 miles away who will never visit the front door.

When you are building reports for clients, be brave enough to show the numbers that actually pay their bills. That is how you move from being a "social media person" to a strategic partner.
