Not your typical post for a web designer, but after the heartbreaking news this week has brought us, I cannot get this particular spare bedroom at my Grandma’s old house out of my head.
We’d visit at least once a week as children and I never once saw anyone enter this room. On the rare occasion that the door was open, I’d always take a peak. Who was this room for? For over a decade, it seemed untouched. It was bright, white and pristine every time.
I remember sitting down in the living room next to my Grandma and asking “why do you even have such a room if no one was allowed to use it?" 🤔 and without missing a beat, she told me THAT room is reserved for when her good friend Her Majesty The Queen comes to visit. And I didn’t even question it.
Growing up in a small village in North Yorkshire, my Grandma’s was the only Southern accent I’d ever heard, and - as we all know - down South is where the Queen lives so OBVIOUSLY, the Queen knows my Grandma!
How could I have been so blind?! 🤦🏻♂️ They must have played netball together back in the day, nowadays when she visits they probably just played bridge together, sharing one of my Grandma’s poshest boxed red wines 🍷
I lost my Grandma to COVID in 2020, but over the past couple of days, I have felt like I’ve lost another, for they shared so many qualities. I’m yet to meet someone as just, wise, kind and selfless; always with a smile and always putting the good of the many in front of her own. And just like with my own Grandma, once again I’m catching myself thinking “what are we going to do without her?”.
