Fave delivery of the month! It’s for my daughter, but I probably get even more excited about it than her…

Why?

Because I write the stories that go into the .adventures boxes! 😊

I first started talking to the lovely Hannah and Charlotte of last year, and when they told me they were looking for a copywriter to help bring their story-themed bathtime boxes to life, I knew I just HAD to get the job!

I’ve always dreamed of writing children’s stories, but it’s not the kind of job we copywriters often get presented with, and I’ve never quite got my act together enough to just go for it. Thankfully, Hannah and Charlotte DID give me the job (you can imagine the happy dance! 💃🏼) and I’ve now had the absolute pleasure of creating a story concept and characters for them. The best bit though is that every month I get to dive in (pardon the pun) to that part of my imagination and take our daring brother-and-sister duo on a new bathtime adventure 🛁✨🦖🚀🦀

The icing on the cake is that the boxes and their contents are a HUGE hit with my daughter! They honestly make bathtime a truly joyful affair, so do check them out if you have a little one in your life 💦

It’s always a little nerve-wracking writing that first piece of copy for a new client, so when feedback like this comes in it’s just THE best feeling 🙌

An e-commerce business owner’s brand is their baby! So there’s no higher compliment than them saying they feel their brand is in good hands 😊

It’s National Storytelling Week and, inspired by , I’m sharing the story of how I became a copywriter – with a slight detour through two other things beginning with C: coffee and curls.

🤔

Bear with me! I love learning random facts about people, so maybe you do too? And actually, these ‘three Cs’ have something in common: I wouldn’t be without them now, but it took a while to embrace them.

☕ First up, coffee. I used to HATE the stuff. I was a diehard tea drinker. The smell of coffee knocked me sick, let alone the taste.

But about a year ago (I don’t know why) I tried it again. I liked it. And slowly but surely, it took the place of tea as my cuppa of choice. Now I can’t function without it! 🤷🏻‍♀️

➰ On to curls: for 42 years I hated my curly hair. I loved curls on others, but if I let mine loose I felt like I was channelling Brian May 😳

For years I straightened it to within an inch of its life. Then last year I decided to have another crack at learning to love my curls. I’m defo not at ‘love’ yet, but I haven’t straightened for months and I don’t hate it!

📝 As for copywriting…

I started out in marketing for some of the UK’s best-known retailers. For over a decade, I worked on all kinds of projects, learned loads about marketing and (the best bit) met lifelong friends 💛

But…

I hated ‘corporateness’. I had no desire to ‘climb the ladder’. I was working long hours to drive results I felt pretty ‘meh’ about.

There was, however, one thing I LOVED: writing.

I was always writing. Headlines for press ads one minute; POS and product descriptions the next.

I knew copywriting was my passion. But – even though I’d spent years writing for household names – imposter syndrome is a b*tch, and for ages I didn’t believe I could make it my career.

In 2012, I finally went for it. Fast forward through ten years of freelancing and I’m happy as Larry! (Who IS Larry, btw?🤷🏻‍♀️)

Along the way, I discovered my happy place is writing for indie e-commerce brands, helping awesome entrepreneurs find their voice and tell the world about their products. Driving results for them makes me feel YEAH, not meh! 🙌

That’s my story. What’s yours?

It’s official: I have the best clients 💛

Covid has hit me like a 🚂 this week and I’ve had to delay lots of work. Without exception, my clients have been wonderful and much more concerned about me than their copy! 🙏🏻

It’s really made me reflect on how grateful I am to be working with businesses that are not only brilliant brands with incredible products/services, but that are run by truly lovely people. It’s honestly such a pleasure to write for them all and I feel so lucky that this is my job!

So I wanted to give them a little shout out here on my grid. Firstly because if you don’t already know about them, you should! And secondly because they should 💯 be on your hit list for Christmas shopping!

Morning sunshine! ☀️

It’s been a while and I’ve welcomed some lovely new followers over the past couple of months 💛 So I thought I’d take a minute to reintroduce myself…

I’m Kelly, a freelancer copywriter from Devon. I spent about 15 years living in the midlands, but returned to my home county in 2013 and couldn’t be happier to be back. I think being away for so long gave me a fresh appreciation for all the natural beauty I grew up surrounded by (but totally took for granted at the time!) 🌳🌊🌸🌼🌿🏖

My copywriting jam is working with e-commerce businesses, particularly female-founded brands. I love nothing more than getting to know the people and the story behind a biz, then creating content that attracts their ideal customers and turns them into buyers.

I write for all kinds of collateral, but most of my days are spent happily creating the following copy:

⭐️ Website content
⭐️ Product descriptions
⭐️ Blogs
⭐️ Email newsletters and sequences
⭐️ Facebook and Instagram ads

I’m also a bit of a keyword geek 🤓 and relish the challenge of improving a client’s search-engine rankings with well-optimised content.

If you’re an e-commerce biz and need some expert help telling the world about your brand and products, let’s chat! 💬

A classic phrase, don’t you agree?

It came up during a chat with a lovely client earlier this week, and I remembered what a brilliant analogy it is to explain the difference between writing factually (features) and persuasively (benefits).

Picture the scene: an indie business selling actual sausages (let’s go with the sausage theme) is at a farmer’s market, chatting to a potential customer:

💬 Customer: “What are you selling there then?”

💬 Biz owner: “Sausages. They’re made from organic pork, herbs and spices.”

💬 Customer: “So what?” 🤷

💬 Biz owner: “Ooh, you can taste the quality of our free-range organic pork in every mouthful. These hearty bangers are handcrafted right here in Devon and made to our signature recipe, using only all-natural ingredients and absolutely no fillers, so you can rest assured you’re not eating any hidden nasties. They’re really versatile too – great in a casserole, delicious as part of a full English and the star of the show at any barbecue!”

That, right there, is the sizzle 🔥 It's the promise of what’s to come when you snap up these sausages!

Now imagine that same business owner sells their sausages online and applies this technique to their product copy.

I know if I was in the market for some organic sausages and stumbled upon this kind of description, I’d be adding them to my cart while checking my weather app for the next barbecue opportunity!

Don't forget to save this post as a handy reminder of how to be more persuasive in your writing!

Is anyone else now craving a hot dog? 🌭

WHY WORK WITH A FREELANCE COPYWRITER? 🤔

Today is the IPSE National Freelancers’ Day. It’s a day to celebrate all things freelance, and especially to big-up all the freakin’ fabulous freelancers we know and love 👑

Working with a freelancer can be a game-changing move for a growing e-commerce business, and here’s why:

👩‍💻 Freelancers are super-motivated types who go above and beyond for their clients.

👩‍💻 We’re experts in our fields and niches.

👩‍💻 No training required! We hit the ground running.

👩‍💻 You have a HUGE pool of talent to choose from.

👩‍💻 We can hook you up with other brilliant freelancers who can help your business grow.

Today I’ve celebrated the fact I’ve been freelance for nine years 😮 by doing one of the things I love most about being self-employed: working in one of my favourite cafes, .

Freelancing, for me, means freedom. Freedom to choose the clients I work with. Freedom to tailor my hours around my family. Freedom to choose where I work. Freedom to work in my pyjamas if I want. Freedom to down tools and go for a walk in the sunshine (deadlines permitting) 🌞

Being self-employed isn’t always fun and games, as any freelancer will tell you. It’s hard work and it requires you to wear ALL the hats and spin ALL the plates.

But for me the pros far outweigh the cons ⚖️

Do you work with freelancers, or are you a freelancer yourself? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments ⬇️

And here’s a shout-out to all the awesome freelancers I know. Happy National Freelancers’ Day! You’re all ace ⭐

📣 Amp up your About Page!

If your About Page is (to quote McFly) All About You, it's time to give it a remix.

It's one of the most important pages on your website (usually second only to your home page in terms of hits), but so many businesses simply tick it off with copy that's totally off-key.

And then that copy sits there, gathering cyber dust and not doing very much at all to inspire potential customers to take any action (other than to bounce).

In my latest blog (link below) I've shared my top tips for amping up your About Page and making it an engaging piece of content that connects with your ideal customer and inspires them to act.

Here are the headlines:

1️⃣ Personalise your headline. Don't just write 'About Me' or 'About Us' – greet your reader warmly! And add a subheading that summarises how you can help them.

2️⃣ Tell your story. People are interested – I promise! Your story is what humanises your brand, makes you memorable and helps readers know, like and trust you.

Talk about your story as a journey that inspired your brand mission. And of course, tell your reader what your mission is, who your customer is and how your product can enhance their life. If they’re reading your About Page there’s a good chance the ‘who’ is them and they’re in the market for your products. This is a golden opportunity to reaffirm that connection!

3️⃣ Be yourself. Always! Write in your natural voice, use the first person and be sure to include a photo of you or your team.

4️⃣ Include a call to action. Don't be shy about asking readers to take that next step, whether it's signing up, booking in or checking out your latest products.

Give it read, then why not give your About Page a once-over to make sure it's ticking these boxes?

🦸 What’s your superpower? 🦸

Earlier this week I posted about the importance of making sure you don’t simply tell potential customers what you do, but what you can do for them.

A tip for getting in the right mindset to communicate this is to think about your USP in a totally different way.

Instead of considering your ‘unique selling proposition’ (which, let’s face it, sounds pretty corporate and soulless), try thinking about it as your ULTIMATE SUPERPOWER!

💥 What makes your product a lifesaver, in the eyes of your existing customers?

💥 How might your services swoop in and save the day?

💥 Do you have the power to make life easier or better in some way?

💥 What villains (AKA pain points) do you defeat?

For me, reframing those three little letters – U S P – in this way completely flips the focus.

Instead of honing in on “how one's own brand or product is superior to its competitors” (👈 textbook definition of USP), it encourages you to think about how you can be your customers’ hero.

It puts THEM in the centre of the picture, not YOU.

And it helps you see where you can add more POW to your messaging.

Because while it’s true that many heroes keep their superpowers hidden from the world, your business most definitely should not!

What’s your business’s superpower? Let me know in the comments👇🏻
