Quick one for anyone in the trades.

Open your own website on your phone, turn the wifi off, and count how long it takes to load.

If it's more than a couple of seconds, you're losing work. Customers usually find you on their phone, often on site with a weak signal. A slow site means they go back to Google and try the next name. You never find out.

It's one of the most common problems we see and it's an easy fix.

Something has quietly changed in the last year or so.

People looking for a plumber, an electrician, a builder, they're not always going to Google now. A lot of them are just asking an AI assistant who to call and going with whatever it says.

The thing is, those tools can only suggest businesses they can actually find and understand. If all you've got is a page, or a website that doesn't say clearly what you do and where you work, you're invisible to them.

It's the same problem as Google was ten years ago, just a new front door. The fix is the same too: a proper site, written plainly, with your services, your areas and your contact details where a machine and a human can both read them.

Something we see on nearly every trade website we look at: nowhere on the site does it say which towns they actually cover.

It causes two problems.

Google does not know which area to put you in front of, so you end up behind the bloke down the road who did list his towns.

And the customer reading it cannot tell whether you will travel out to them. If they have to guess, most of them just ring the next name on the list.

It is a five minute fix. Write out the towns and villages you cover and put them plainly on your home page and next to your contact details. Kidderminster, Stourport, Bewdley, Bromsgrove, wherever you go.

Simple change, and it quietly wins you work you were already missing.

The job you didn't get probably wasn't about price.

Somebody looked you up first. They found an old page and not much else, so they rang the other bloke instead. You never heard about it.

The bigger work is where this bites hardest. Letting agents, commercial clients, anyone spending proper money will always check who they're dealing with before they pick up the phone. They're not being funny about it, they just want to know you're a real business.

A website answers that quietly in the background while you're on the tools. Who you are, what you do, the jobs you've actually finished.

Quick one for anyone with a trade or a small business.

Get your phone out and open your own website on it. Not the laptop, the phone.

Then have a proper go at it the way a customer would. Can you read it without zooming in? Does tapping the number actually ring you? How long does it sit there loading when you are off the wifi?

Most people who look you up are doing it on a phone, usually in the evening, usually while they are also looking at two or three others. If yours is hard work, they do not tell you. They just ring somebody else.

It is one of the easiest things to get right and one of the most common things we see done badly.

It's a fair thought, but here's the catch. When someone in Kidderminster searches Google for a plumber or an electrician, your page almost never shows up. The lad down the road with a proper website does.

And even when a customer finds your page, they have to scroll past years of posts just to find your number.

A website does one simple job. It tells people what you do, where you cover, and how to get hold of you, in about five seconds.

Keep the page, it's good for showing off your work. Just don't let it be the only place you exist online.

The enquiries get better before they get bigger.

That is the bit nobody mentions when they talk about getting a website.

Most trades expect the phone to suddenly ring off the hook. What usually happens first is quieter than that, and honestly more useful. The people who do get in touch already know what you do, which areas you cover and roughly what a job like theirs costs. So you spend less of your evening explaining and more of it quoting real work.

A lot of tradespeople tell us the same thing. They know they need a proper website, but the idea of handing over a big lump sum up front puts them right off. Fair enough.

So we do it the other way round.

We build your site first and show you the finished thing. If you are happy with it, it goes live and you pay a small amount each month. That covers the hosting, the updates and any changes you want down the line. If you are not happy with it, you owe us nothing and we shake hands.

No long tie in either. Cancel whenever you like.
