Sacombe Simmentals A pedigree Simmental herd based on quality genetics from across the world

The Sacombe herd was founded in 1970, by Paull Borlaseand his parents, and is the oldest herd within the UK herd book. Between 1970 and 1995, 23 females were imported from Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France. Now totaling 150 breeding females and 200 followers, stock are reared commercially from a breeding policy designed to suit our farm. With limited rainfall we breed flesh rather than feed

flesh, so our cows are medium in size with high fertility, longevity, docility and natural fleshing ability – a must for today’s market. With 18 cow families in the herd we have a wealth of genetics at our fingertips and are fortunate to have used the very best stock sires the breed has to offer. Although a vital shop window, showing is done in moderation as we prefer to breed a cow suited to the market place rather than the show ring and with the need to ever increase farm profitability we have taken a more direct role in marketing beef from the herd through our on farm butchery Bridget B's traditional beef range

The herd has been performance recorded since 1970, is of a high health status and is DNA tested to enhance meat eating quality. In 2001 a herd of Belted Galloways was introduced to compliment the Simmental herd and provide a native breed to the farm bringing with it huge environmental and grass management benefits.

Next up, we are pleased to announce that Farmers Guardian Young Farming Hero 2025 is...

Sam Hale from Hertfordshire!

A 14yr old farmer with a passion for promoting farming to the public at shows, in school and on social media. In addition to being responsible for his own flock, he is an active participant in the family farm and Butchery diversification. After asking their MP some tough questions at the NFU MP meet up, Sam invited them to visit the farm and discussed IHT, SFI, fly tipping and more.

Judges' comments:

“Sam is clearly beyond his years, offering a passionate voice for the farming industry, not afraid to ask the tough questions.”

“It is important to let the next generation have their voices heard at all levels, and Sam is speaking up for his fellow young farmers.”

Congratulations Sam!

Very sad to hear of the passing of my very first ‘Boss’ today, Roger Pascoe

Roger was our stockman when I left school and came home to work on the farm and I was Roger’s apprentice

He was a great character of the old school variety and taught me plenty of things including how to pick a National Hunt winner or two and was a great asset to our farm, winning both the Supreme Championships at Perth Bull sales and The Royal Show during his two years here before his love of his home county of Cornwall called him home

RIP Roger, you will be sorely missed by your many friends
