Pics or it didn't happen!

Authentic, natural photos of your events, activities or just the day-today are a powerful way to illustrate the impact of your organisation.

I’ve been photographing charities, social enterprises and voluntary organisations for 25 years. From conferences, workshops and classes to performing arts and sports. From the day-to-day work of your organisation to portraits and PR photos.

Much of my work has been in sensitive settings, including mental health, addiction and recovery, criminal justice, social care and community development. With a quiet, calm and respectful approach, I aim to keep out of the way so that people are relaxed and can focus on their activity, work or event.

It's been 23 years since I first took on a paid photography commission, a few years after setting up my little graphic design business.

I've had the absolute privilege of photographing thousands of people since then: documentary, portraits, PR, events. Photographing people has always been one of my favourite things to do, but I've also done a bit of urban landscape, product and some others types of work.

My first commission was for a housing charity, on black and white film using a Pentax ME SLR and some lenses I inherited from my dad. I moved to digital in 2005 and bought my first DSLR in 2007 (a little silver Canon 350D).

But now I'm hanging up my neck strap and retiring my photography work, except for an occasional bit of documentary work for existing clients. It's been a wonderful journey and I'm looking forward to delving into my archives over the coming years to find a few favourites.

My graphic design and branding business continues at pace (it's been a busy year so far!).

This photo of Martin was from my first portrait commission on digital, for Midland Mencap. I loved meeting Martin and this is still one on my favourite portraits. © Ian Cuthbert

Current status...

It's been a super busy start to 2025.

I'm just finishing off my second report design for a new client. It's public sector (not my usual thing, but it's a great cause that I really support) and have really enjoyed working with them. The report is embargoed, so I can't say more just yet. I have two more looooong reports to do for them in March and April.

I've also just started on a branding commission (one of my favourite types of work) for a new social enterprise and I'm really looking forward to seeing how this shapes up.

And I have lots more design work booked in for regular clients. Busy, busy!

Doing a quick staff and trustee portrait session for a favourite client, ready for a new website. The van’s in the garage all week so this is my (half hour) walking portable studio set up. 😂 Two cameras, two stands, one flash, one reflector, one backdrop, one small octabox modifier, plus all the bits bits and bobs. 📸

Wow, what a fantastic event! It was wonderful spending the day taking photos at the The Hearts & Minds Partnership National Meet-Up in Birmingham today - their first ever national gathering.

The Hearts & Minds team put so much effort and love into making a creative, inclusive and safe space to discuss voluntary and community sector - and it definitely paid off.

Hearts & Minds Partnership - led by Acacia Family Support Smile Group and Bluebell Care - is an initiative to connect, support and grow the voluntary and community sector perinatal mental health community in England.
