Early autumn ewe supplementation
Maximising lamb output with the sale of strong and healthy lambs at a maximum price is the ultimate goal for every sheep producer. Yet, with an average scanning percentage of just 170% in the UK, there are clear opportunities to improve.
One of the key objectives to prepare for tupping is to ensure ewes are at the ideal body condition score (BCS). It is recommended that lowland and hill ewes are BCS 3.5 and 2.5 respectively when going into the tup.

For ewes that need to gain condition on the approach to tupping and have low quality and quantity of grazing a great option would be OPTI-BLOX. Plus, with the current rising costs of plastic, the use of blocks is an economical alternative to conventional buckets.
OPTI-BLOX is a high energy and protein (22%) block, containing natural protein and urea to support feed digestion and animal performance, recommended for ewes with poor BCS.
For ewe’s that need to gain condition but have grass available you could consider OPTI-BLOX SUPER PLUS FISH OIL. A high energy and protein (16.5%) block, it contains a high proportion of natural protein to support colostrum, milk production and good frame growth and fish oil to support fertility.

Downland Opti-Blox are available on early order deals from Davidsons Farm & Country.

Introducing a new bucket for OPTI-LIX HIGH ENERGY
For the 2026 season, OPTI-LIX HIGH ENERGY is moving into a new, improved bucket designed for better access and stability.
Why have we changed the bucket?
A review of the product highlighted areas where changes could be made to improve the durability and use of the bucket. In response, we’ve introduced a stronger, more practical design that is easier for livestock to access and offers greater stability. The new bucket is a shorter, wider square shape and because the bucket is shorter in height, it is more stable and does not tip over so easily when in use.
These changes reflect our ongoing commitment to deliver products that perform when used out on-farm.
The new buckets are manufactured in the UK, just like the product itself, meaning OPTI-LIX HIGH ENERGY is 100% made in Britain.
Is it still the same product?
Rest assured, the OPTI-LIX HIGH ENERGY product inside the bucket is still the same great product that you know and love. An extra high energy (16ME MJ/KG DM) and protein feed lick, it is suitable for all types of ewes, rams, and lambs.
Benefits and features
• 12% protein supplied by both natural sources and urea supports forage utilisation.
• High sugar content to support grass and forage utilisation and overall feed intake.
• Full complement of minerals, vitamins and trace elements, including:
o Selenium to support fertility. Includes a proportion of total selenium as Availa selenium, a more bioavailable source of selenium, to support fertility, animal health and performance
o A proportion of total zinc as protected to support tissue health, including udder and hoof health
Feeding
To support success from pre-tupping to lambing:
• Offer from 2 weeks pre-tupping for a total of 8 weeks.
• Offer in lamb ewes from 6 weeks pre-lambing.
Also suitable for feeding during all stages of the production cycle when extra energy is required, including throughout mid-pregnancy to support BCS, placental development and forage utilisation.

Speak to your account manager for more details and early order deals available until the end of October.
