Over the past day or so, some users have noticed they can only add three hashtags to a post, even though the official limit remains at 30. It appears Instagram is quietly experimenting with a new approach to tagging, and it is already sparking debate.
If this becomes a platform wide change, it could reshape how businesses, creators and organisations use Instagram for reach, discovery and community building.
Potential benefits
• Encourages more thoughtful and relevant tagging
• Reduces clutter and overuse of hashtags
• Helps the algorithm understand content themes more clearly
Potential drawbacks
• Fewer chances for niche or community led discovery
• Less flexibility for small businesses and creators
• A single rule that may not suit the variety of content posted every day
For those of us working in communications and digital storytelling, it is an interesting moment. Clear, purposeful messaging has always been more powerful than long strings of hashtags, but this shift may require many accounts to rethink how they approach visibility and engagement.
Platform changes can feel disruptive, but they are also a reminder that strong content, clear messages and authentic stories will always travel further than any collection of tags.
If you would like to review your social media approach or strengthen your content plan, we are always happy to help.

Will a three hashtag limit improve relevance, or make discovery harder for the people who rely on it most?
