Cryogenic gas systems run at extreme temperatures — and in that world, even trace moisture (ppm/ppb levels) can cause big problems. ❄️⚙️

In a new technical article, Shaw Moisture Meters (UK) Ltd explains why dew point measurement is so critical in cryogenic production, storage and transfer — helping prevent freeze-out, protect equipment and keep gas quality on-spec.

Why moisture is such a risk in cryogenics
✅ Water vapour can freeze and accumulate in cold boxes and heat exchangers, restricting flow and disrupting heat transfer
✅ In LNG and natural gas applications, trace moisture can form hydrates that block pipelines, valves and transfer lines
✅ Residual moisture can also contribute to corrosion (especially where CO₂ or H₂S are present) and push high-purity gases out of spec

Where accurate measurement happens (and where it shouldn’t)
A key point in the guide: moisture should be measured in the vapour phase, after full vaporisation. Measuring directly in cryogenic liquids is unreliable, and partially vaporised flow can contain ice crystals that corrupt readings or damage sensors.

The article also highlights common monitoring points across:

Air separation units (ASUs) for product quality and dryer performance
Cylinder filling and tanker loading to meet moisture specifications
LNG systems (including boil-off gas lines) where hydrate risk is highest
Hydrogen systems with especially stringent moisture limits, including upstream of PEM fuel cells

The takeaway is simple: reliable dew point measurement helps protect critical assets, reduce operational risk and support consistent compliance with quality requirements.

Good drainage infrastructure rarely gets noticed — until it isn’t there. 🌧️🏗️

Althon Limited has supplied three precast concrete headwalls for a Bellway Homes development in the Thames Valley, supporting the installation of site drainage infrastructure and helping deliver a robust, engineered finish at key discharge points.

The units were delivered with GMS sloped gratings factory fitted, creating a more complete package ready for installation. In this application, the gratings are designed to prevent anyone from entering the pipework, supporting safer drainage outfalls while still allowing water to pass through.

Why headwalls matter
Precast concrete headwalls are commonly used where pipework discharges into open watercourses, attenuation ponds, detention basins, rivers, ditches or swales. They help:
✅ Provide a durable interface between buried pipework and open discharge points
✅ Protect surrounding ground from erosion
✅ Withstand regular flows and site conditions over the long term

Factory fitting accessories like gratings can also streamline programmes by reducing on-site tasks and improving consistency compared with in-situ construction.

Althon Limited manufactures a wide range of precast headwalls for pipes and culverts, with optional accessories including gratings, flap valves, penstocks, handrails and other flow control features — helping ensure drainage details are considered early and delivered in a controlled way.

Check out the latest blog from Labfacility Ltd, they explain all you need to know about temperature sensing.

Understanding Terminal Heads & Sensor Construction Options

When it comes to temperature sensing, selecting the right terminal head and sheath materials is essential for performance, durability and suitability across different applications.

A wide range of terminal head designs are available to meet varying requirements, including differences in size, material, environmental resistance and protection against fire or hazardous conditions. The most commonly used designs in Europe follow DIN 43 729, defining Type A and Type B heads—with the compact Type B being particularly popular due to its compatibility with 2-wire transmitters. These heads house terminal blocks that enable secure connection of extension wires, using materials such as copper, plated brass or thermoelement alloys for optimal performance.

For applications where a terminal head may not be required, alternative termination options are available. These include direct extension leads, plug-and-socket connections or short wire “tails”. While these solutions can offer cost savings and flexibility, they may provide less mechanical protection compared to traditional head-mounted designs.

In addition, the choice of sheath material plays a critical role in sensor performance. Options range from mild and stainless steels to high-temperature ceramics and specialised alloys. Selection depends on key factors such as operating temperature, environmental conditions and long-term durability.

With so many configuration options available, selecting the right combination ensures reliable, accurate temperature measurement across a wide range of industrial and process environments.

Retaining walls aren’t just structural necessities anymore — they’re often front-and-centre design features. So the finish matters. 🧱✨

Elite Precast Concrete have shared a practical guide to choosing the right Retainer-Rock® face for UK projects, with two distinct options that deliver the same proven performance but very different aesthetics: Cobblestone and Liscio Stone.

What is Retainer-Rock®?
A precast, interlocking retaining wall system used for earth retention, boundary walls, highways and infrastructure schemes, commercial developments, and landscaping/residential projects — manufactured under controlled factory conditions for consistent quality and fast on-site installation.

Choosing the right face:
✅ Cobblestone — a traditional, textured stone effect with realistic joint detailing. Ideal for landscaped areas, housing developments and settings where a softer, heritage-style look is preferred.
✅ Liscio Stone — a cleaner, more contemporary stone finish with a smoother, more uniform surface. Suits urban environments, business parks and infrastructure-led schemes where a minimal aesthetic works best.

Offering both finishes gives designers, contractors and developers flexibility to meet planning requirements and architectural intent — without changing structural systems. Same installation method, same durability, two visual outcomes.

Manufactured in Shropshire under ISO-certified quality control, Retainer-Rock® units are designed for British conditions and built to support faster installation, reduced on-site labour, consistent finish quality and long-term durability.

If a Siemens aftermarket pitch control slip ring from BGB looks different at first glance, that’s because it’s different by design — and the visible changes are only the start. ⚙️🌬️

In a new article, BGB explains why its unit uses a larger, purpose-built form factor designed to fit the true operational envelope. That extra space isn’t cosmetic — it enables a more robust build, better material use and reduced mechanical stress, all aimed at long-term reliability.

What’s engineered beneath the surface:
✅ Axial sealing to help prevent contamination ingress
✅ Integrated weep holes to manage oil exposure effectively
✅ Durable cover construction to resist distortion over time
✅ Maintenance-free architecture designed to reduce downtime and lifecycle costs
✅ Developed with technicians and circular economy principles in mind
✅ Fully SGRE approved for platform compatibility and added confidence

And the performance data backs it up. In validation testing, the BGB unit exceeded 240,000,000 revolutions before testing concluded — roughly 20 years of real-world operation under optimal conditions. That’s 2.4× the original specification.

The takeaway is simple: if you’re judging slip rings on like-for-like appearance, you’re missing the point. The difference you see is the reliability you get.

A safe outdoor play area starts from the ground up — and with play bark, depth isn’t just about appearance, it’s about safety. 🌿🛝

In a practical new guide, Mainland Aggregates Ltd explains how to choose the right depth and calculate how much play bark you need for gardens, schools and nurseries — so you can order with confidence and avoid running short.

Why depth matters
Play bark helps absorb impact from falls. The deeper the layer, the better the cushioning — especially under climbing frames, swings and raised equipment.

Recommended depths (general guide):
✅ Light domestic play: 100 mm
✅ Under climbing frames: 150 mm
✅ Higher play equipment: 200–300 mm

For many garden set-ups, 150 mm is a sensible, widely used depth.

Simple calculation
Length (m) × Width (m) × Depth (m) = Volume (m³)
Example: 5 m × 4 m × 0.15 m = 3 m³

The guide also explains how to convert volume into bulk bags (typically around 0.7–1.0 m³ per bag depending on the product), why it’s smart to round up for settling, and whether to use a membrane to reduce weeds and improve longevity.

It also covers installation basics and common mistakes to avoid — like laying too little depth, skipping top-ups, or not using edging.
