What does this mean for the everyday user?

What does it mean for businesses advertising on Facebook and Instagram?

It appears there are concerns about a weakened privacy regime as the UK departs from EU law. This may mean UK consumer data is less protected than it has previously been.

UK data protection law still stands. So does this mean little actually changes?

Those UK businesses advertising to and selling to EU countries will still have to adhere to EU laws.

It is worth keeping an eye on the privacy requirements over the coming months as it may change how you advertise, who you can target and re-target in your advertising.

The way people make purchase decisions is messy.

The journey between trigger and purchase is not linear. It’s a complicated web of touch points - different for each individual.

Even less clear is how people process the information they receive. ‘Best’ vs ‘cheap’ for example. Searches for best outpaces cheap, but these terms have varied meanings for each person searching. Best can mean best value, or it can best quality.

People explore and evaluate on their decision making process. Exploration is a phase of looking outward and broadening the range: evaluation is a phase of sorting, prioritising and reducing the range considered.

Within this journey 6 biases that influence purchasing decisions have been identified:

👉 The power of now (the longer you have to wait the weaker the proposition)
👉 Social proof (the persuasiveness of recommendations & reviews)
👉 Scarcity bias (as availability drops desirability rises)
👉 Authority bias (the influence of expert or trusted sources)
👉 Category heuristic (short description of product specifications to simplify purchase decision making)
👉 Power of free (free gifts can be powerful motivators)

Understanding this winding road can help you better answer the various needs and desires of potential customers.
