I'm working on two senior production leadership role atm right. The companies couldn't be more different. And yet both come to the same conclusion: the old job description doesn't work anymore.

As some sort of self-soothing therapy, I've written in my blog how I'm tackling the searches - and discussing who should be in the room, where to find the right people, and the one question I always ask before a search begins.

Here's a snippet:

"The production leaders who make a genuine difference do not wait for the org chart to give them permission. They make themselves indispensable so quickly and so specifically that the question of permission becomes irrelevant."

Full piece at alexhedges.com/blog — genuinely interested in what you think.

Producers know: a boshed-out JD costs everyone time.

You can feel when a role’s been thrown together.

I've been talking to loads of producers who've made the switch from external to internal brand producers. It's super interesting all those insights are also being built into the training the J&R Collective is creating just for producers who want to get match fit in the "bigger picture" of production within marketing.

Sophie Chordia (Head of Production Entain, Ex EP Saatchi and Saatchi) memorably said 'You couldn't hide from having knowledge of the business, even if you wanted to.' She's one of many production leaders who've made the transition from agency or production company roles, and their insights have been invaluable in developing the content for the producer training on 17th Sept at 10am BST

"Everything is an acronym or abbreviation. The majority of people you deal with are corporate, not creative, so you speak very different languages and experience very different working behaviours."

The one-off webinar is going to cover this stuff and more for producers who want to future proof their careers. Use my 50% off discount !

I'm not saying going brand-side is for everyone, but this context could be super useful for most advertising producers. Also don't forget once you go brand-side doesn't mean you can't hop back in future...look out for my next Info Nugget!

After 20 years of producing and now 5years placing producers in roles one pattern keeps showing up:

The producers who stay and thrive? They’re working in environments with clear goals, regular development conversations, and visible leadership support.

When founders/managers/leaders puts time and thought into producer development, people stick around - and therefore are driving more revenue for those busiensses.

The difference isn’t sophisticated HR systems.

It’s leadership that consistently invests in listening, refining, communicatting.

I think this starts with the job description and interview process and I love being part of that and helping leaders really drill into waht success looks like for each role I work on.

✅ Clear expectations—written down, not just implied

✅ Regular check-ins (not just annual reviews)

✅ Producers who know how their work ties into the big picture

✅ Support when priorities shift, not just pressure

✅ Wins celebrated—not just mistakes flagged

The flip side?

❌ No clear onboarding or company way of working

❌ Vague roles and shifting, unsupported expectations

❌ Leadership misaligned with no shared direction

❌ Little to no feedback or development

❌ Producers isolated and left to figure it out

When creative companies get this right, they become the places top producers want to join—and stay.

The ones that don’t? They find themselves back in the hiring cycle again and again.

Using me as the “broker” can help too, but I havent’ got a crystal ball, it’s not just about the suitability of the candidate - it’s also about the strength of the leaders.

The Curiosity Chronicles is back - after a year off, I’ve started my newsletter again There’s so much going on in advertising production at the moment.

Lots of movement, new opportunities, but also disallusionment and trepidation.

My newsletter is always positive and realistic - let’s face it , never in human history has there been more content that needs producing - there is gold in them hills surely!

Producers are often used to working with diary services or agents—usually paying a fee or commission for representation.

But I’ve found many producers in advertising aren’t always clear on what I offer THEM as a headhunter.

Here’s the how it works:
My clients are the companies.
They pay me to find the right producers for their roles—so I invest a lot of time getting to know producers of all shapes, sizes, and specialisms.

If you’re a Producer, here’s how I can help:

🎯 Let’s connect: Send me your CV, and we’ll book in a chat. I’ll keep you in the loop on live briefs.

📚 Free resources: I put time and energy into content and downloads that (I’m told!) are actually useful. Sign up to my LinkedIn Newsletter or head to the Downloads Page to grab some freebies.

⚡ Need more support?
– CV Glow Up Guide £25
– Producer Powow £99

There is work out there.

It might look different than it did 10 years ago—but if your profile is sharp and you’re targeting the right companies, there’s plenty of reason to stay optimistic.
