When you want to look someone up where do you start?

Google? LinkedIn?

It's usually pretty easy to find an online listing somewhere.

When I'm auditing people as part of their marketing plan, I often find out of date social media profiles.

I found one recently that hadn't been updated in 2 years, belonging to an active company trying to attract business.

So why should you close down old profiles? Here are 3 quick reasons.

1. It stops you finding messages sent from customers that never received an answer. You lost a customer before you even sent them a price list or tried to convert them.

2. It helps to keep your company safe online. Old accounts can be hacked without you noticing and it's amazing how many of us use the same passwords all over the place. You may not care that a hacker gets your MySpace account but could they log into your Instagram, Twitter, Facebook with the same details?

3. It's better for the environment. Keeping old digital files hanging around takes up server space and adds to the digital footprint we all have.

So there we have it, 3 good reasons to shut down your old accounts.

And if you really don't want to for whatever reason. Leave them in a way that makes it possible for people to find your real digital home.

Leave a pinned tweet with your new contact details. Close down the ability for people to send messages. Set up an auto message to let people know where you are.

And also, less profiles, less work for you!

We all need content to keep our marketing wheels turning. Where can we grab things quickly when time is short and to-do lists long?

Here are 5 suggestions of where to look for ideas for content that will really help your customer

1. News websites

Scanning the news for topics that relate to your clients can give you valuable daily content, and ideas to pitch journalists too.

I've spotted interesting articles on what drives influencer culture, turning farm waste into packaging, & whether companies using plastic bottles for their products can be truly environmental leaders with a B Corp status. All of which were interesting to my clients.

2. Pinterest

I'm a big fan of Pinterest personally.

If you blog, it's a very easy way of driving traffic to your website. In addition it provides us with quick and easy ideas on what articles are being written that your clients might be interested in too.
