Everyone's convinced 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲'𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 and ChatGPT's taking over. 𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁.

Google still handles somewhere between 8 and 16 billion searches a day (depending on the source).

ChatGPT processes a few billion messages, and a message isn't the same thing as a search. If someone's after a plumber near Louth, they're still typing it into Google and ringing the first decent result.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴'𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱.

AI Overviews now answer plenty of questions before anyone clicks through to a website, so vague marketing copy gets you nowhere. Specific, detailed content does.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼𝗼; reviews, hours, photos, posts, all of it.

If you dropped SEO because someone told you it's dead, you didn't lose to AI. You lost to your own website going stale.

Australia's already doing it. The UK's not far behind. And now the EU is looking at restricting social media for under-13s too.

None of that is really about your business. But 𝗶𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂, age checks become your problem the moment they land.

A page isn't a website. You don't own it, you don't control it, and you've got no guarantee it'll work the same way next year.

Facebook, let's be honest, you've got a shelf life of about six hours and most business posts get buried under a mountain of AI generated s***.

I've just been looking at some stats for one of the smaller websites I look after.

𝗙𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀, three new articles a month on average. In three months it picked up 𝟲𝟵,𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, (that means 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴) over 700 clicks, and around 𝟭𝟯,𝟰𝟬𝟬 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 on AI platforms like ChatGPT (etc).

That's why I still bang on about websites when many people are obsessing over social media metrics, and why 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲.

Someone asked about using AI and this is what I write up - there's also a link to a longer explanation.

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵: Gemini. The free account is perfectly useful, although the paid version gives you considerably more capability.

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Perplexity. My favourite for research because it’s heavily source-led and makes it relatively easy to check where claims have come from. Again, free is useful, paid gives you much more. The paid version also lets you use models from OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and others within Perplexity.

𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀: ChatGPT. For me, still the best overall tool for this. The paid version gives you far more capability than relying entirely on free access.

𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Claude. This is the one I tend to use for refining writing, and in my experience it’s the best of the lot at actually following detailed writing instructions.

But there’s a much bigger point here.

Whichever one you use, 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

Don’t open ChatGPT and type, “Write me five Facebook posts for my business.”

It barely knows what your business is in enough context, never mind what makes your business different.

Give these systems proper information about you, your experience, your business, your back-story, your brand, your customers, what those customers are usually trying to achieve, how you speak, what you believe, what you don’t want to sound like, and what you’re actually trying to accomplish.

The more useful context you give the tool, the less generic the output becomes.

And one other thing: 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰𝘀 containing half an essay, twelve icons, six arrows and tiny writing nobody can read without pinching and zooming. Hint: they won't.

People scan online. 𝗜𝗳 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝘆.

I could go on about this stuff for days. I’ve been using, studying and paying for all of the above for years.

Spent a few hours yesterday picking apart a new survey on what AI search tools actually use as sources when answering questions, and there's a gap in the data worth flagging if you run a local business.

Every business I talk to in Louth has been told to "just do more video", "post more on Facebook" etc for their marketing.

A recent survey of 500 marketers asked 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗔𝗜 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 like Google AI Overviews (summaries where Google tries to answer questions), ChatGPT and Gemini.

𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝟴𝟮%.

The ultimate social media irony.

I’m asking you to stop and read a post about why nobody stops and reads posts.

But if you’ve given me more than two seconds of your time, you’re already in the minority.

Data shows the average adult spends just 1.7 to 2.5 seconds on a piece of content before scrolling past. If you’re targeting a younger audience, that window drops to a brutal 1.3 seconds.

And that's for a post from someone they already know!

Yet, feeds are absolutely flooded with full-blown, text-heavy flyers created on Canva or AI.

You know the ones. Three different fonts, four sponsor logos, ticket prices, a full address, and the date hidden in tiny print at the bottom.

Can you handle some brutal truth?

𝗡𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Nobody is pinching and zooming to read your flyer.

Your brain sees a wall of text, labels it as "hard work," and flips the thumb up before you’ve even registered what the event is.

If people know you and like you, they might give it a courtesy "like" as they pass. But they still haven't read it.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗱𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰.

Keep it dead simple. One striking photo or one massive headline designed to do one job... to stop the scroll.

The caption should do the heavy lifting:
Put the dates, times, prices, and links in the text. It’s easier to read, it scales to any phone size, and it doesn't require your audience to play detective with two fingers on their screen.

Make it easy for people to buy from you. Don't make them squint.
