Moteado Mezcal, meaning “spotted” in Spanish, takes its name from the distinctive patterns of the Monarch butterfly’s wings—an emblem of movement, resilience, and transformation. This symbolism extends beyond aesthetics; it represents the personal journey of Moteado’s founder, whose story, like that of the Monarch, is one of evolution and discovery while staying deeply connected to their roots. We wove this narrative into the brand’s identity, creating a design that embodies exploration, cultural heritage, and the deep-rooted connection between mezcal and the land.
At the heart of the project is a striking, angular bottle—an homage to ancient elixirs and sacred beverages. Its bold structure commands attention, reflecting both the raw power and refined elegance of mezcal. The design nods to the traditional ways mezcal was once bottled and consumed, bridging the past with a contemporary aesthetic that appeals to a modern, curious audience eager to discover ancestral craftsmanship.
The label design seamlessly integrates with the bottle’s sculptural form, using a double-sided approach to enhance storytelling. One side presents an abstract, textural interpretation of the Monarch butterfly’s patterns, while the other reveals an intricate close-up of the butterfly itself, mapping its presence across Mexico. This visual connection to Michoacán, the very land that gives life to moteadomezcal celebrates the harmony between nature, culture, and craft. By blending organic forms, cultural depth, and a reverence for tradition, the design captures the spirit of mezcal as more than a drink, it is a vessel of history, identity, and transformation.
