On the eve of the new Rugby League Super League season I think it’s a good time to share my ‘Wire’ print featuring the Warrington and Australian legend Brian Bevan.

Bevan score an incredible 796 career tries and he is the only rugby league player to feature in both the English and Australian Halls of Fame.

I was too young to see Brian Bevan play, although my Dad often regaled me with tales of his try scoring exploits in the 50s and 60s.

My childhood hero was his namesake, the Welsh winger John Bevan who terrorised defences in the 70’s and celebrated each try with his arm raised high in the air just before he touched down.

At the start of each season there’s always that eager anticipation that this could be ‘our year’ and this years opening game against neighbours St Helens is already a sell out. It’s been a long wait for Warrington, so long that Brian Bevan was playing in that 1955 Wire team that last won the Rugby League Championship trophy.

Will 2026 finally be our year? Of course it will, it’s always our year. As my dad used to shout from the old Wilderspool terraces, ‘Now the Wire’!

The Bolt of Lightning sculpture, Burtonwood.

My latest print features the sculpture, ‘Bolt of Lightning’ that stands on the site of the old RAF Burtonwood airbase.

It’s estimated that around 50,000 US personnel passed through Burtonwood in its lifetime. It became home to thousands of American families who were stationed at the site just to the north of Warrington. I wonder how many hundreds of local women met their future American husbands at one of the local dance halls and became what was known at the time as ‘GI Brides’?

The sculpture stands 22.5m tall and is situated close to the site of the old runway. It features a US Lockheed P-38F fighter plane soaring skyward and honours all the personnel that were based at Burtonwood airbase.

I’ve done a nightime and daytime version of this illustration and signed giclée prints are available in A4, A3 and A2 sizes.

St Wilfrid’s Christmas Faye is in full swing. There’s loads going on, market stalls in the parish hall, Santa’s in his grotto and he’s even brought along a couple of his reindeer? There’s a hog roast at the Parr Arms as well as BBQ food, coffees, mulled wine and loads more. You can even climb the church tower for a Birds Eye view of the village.

A couple of weeks ago I did a poll asking if anyone would like to see my new Great Sankey print turned into a Christmas card. The answer was a resounding ‘Yes’ so I’ve reworked the illustration and turned it into a winter wonderland. Just need to add a little Robin now and then it’s finished.

I’ll be sending these to print shortly, they’ll probably be A6 in size when folded and will come packaged in cello bags with envelopes. So I can judge demand and how many to order please can you drop me a quick DM if you’re interest in them?

It’s been great to meet so many lovely people at the maker’s markets this week. Thanks to everyone who joined us at the London Bridge and Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden to offer support to all our local traders.

Many micro businesses rely on the pre-Christmas sales to sustain them in the quieter months of the new year. This festive season please consider purchasing your Christmas gifts, cards, wrapping paper and food from small, independent local businesses as every pound spent can make a big difference in a very insecure marketplace.

I don’t usually like talking about Christmas until Bommy night is over. Bonfire Night, (never, ever called ‘Fireworks Night’) was once the most thrilling night of the year until we decided to go down the American route of carving pumpkins and dressing up for Halloween rather than setting fire to anything that would burn.

Sorry, I digress. As I was saying, the day after bonfire night sees my first Christmas market of the year at the London Bridge pub in Stockton Heath.

It’s always a lovely occasion and once Halloween and Bonfire night are over it feels you can legitimately start making plans for the C word and what better place to kick start the festivities than the pub?

There will be lots of amazingly talented local makers selling their unique artisan wares in the cosy surroundings of the Bridge so why not pop down and give them your support. I’ll be there with my locally themed art prints, cards and coasters so if you can make it please stop by and say hello.
