“I’ll book branding photos when my business is bigger.”

Urm… your photos are supposed to help you get there. 👀

Good brand photography gives you a bank of visual assets ready for the next post, launch, press feature or speaking opportunity, and makes it clear you’re serious about what you do.

Does that mean binning the candid selfies? Absolutely not. I love a good no-makeup, real-life post. That stuff builds connection.

But mixing those everyday moments with professional imagery builds credibility too. It says: this is a real person AND a real business.

Plus, when that speaking opportunity lands, you probably don’t want to be digging through your camera roll wondering if they’ll accept the selfie you took in the car last Tuesday.

So... go on and tell yourself it can wait... or head over to my bio and book a FREE brand chemistry call to find out how easy it is to tick this investment off your to-do-list.

I learned how to say no last week.
Best thing I've done for my brand all year.

Boundaries aren't a personality trait.
They're a business strategy.

I spent some time at the Boundaries That Hold workshop last week, hosted by Marnie and Sarah at Collabs, and it reminded me how much personal branding actually starts long before the photos, the website or the content.

It starts with knowing yourself well enough to decide what gets access to you.

I spent years saying yes to everything, hoping it would prove I was worth hiring. It didn't. It just meant I was doing work that didn't reflect me, for people who didn't value what I actually bring to the table.
Being “for everyone” is usually just a very exhausting way of being memorable to no one.

I’m constantly doing this work myself, looking at my strengths, weaknesses, wants, big slightly-unhinged dreams, and where I end and my ideal client begins.

That self-awareness is why Personal Brand Foundation is the starting point of my work with clients. Before we decide what your brand should look like, we need to understand what it actually stands for.

Would you agree that valuing yourself is the first step to teaching other people how to value you too?

Big shoutout to + for creating such a brilliant space to have those conversations. 🖤✨

📸 My pathetic attempt at “packing light” for a branding session around London… in this heat. Every lens felt essential until I remembered I also had to carry them. 🏋🏻‍♀️

Logic prevailed and I abandoned my beloved 70–200mm lense. She’s my favourite lens, weighs 1.6kg and apparently cannot come everywhere with me.

Not gonna lie, it felt a touch like leaving for soft-play without the children. But we managed fine without her, and my shoulders and back are grateful. 🙏🏻

A little throwback to a project that was close to home. 📸

Last year, I had the pleasure of photographing the local market at The Heart Shopping Centre, with the images going on to support the BID proposal for Love Walton

It was more than just a photography project, it was an opportunity to meet the incredible local businesses that make our town so special, hear their stories, and capture the energy, community, and progress that has shaped Walton over the years.

Being trusted to help tell that story was both an honour and an absolute joy. Here's to celebrating the people and places that make our town centre thrive. 🖤✨

My brain is basically a group chat that never sleeps.

Every experience becomes a rabbit hole of ideas, questions and completely unnecessary side thoughts. Sometimes it's brilliant. Sometimes it feels like mashed potatoes.

Which is probably why I've always written things down.

I grew up on a chaotic musical diet of rock, punk, hip-hop, rebel at heart with little side of Enya, The Cranberries, Shania Twain and K's Choice. Growing up in South Africa, big international acts weren't really a given, so seeing Metallica live has lived on my bucket list for a long time.

Recently I got to cross it off.

And the part that got me most wasn't the stadium or the setlist. It was the train ride there. Worn Metallica shirts that had clearly survived decades. Strangers clocking each other's merch with a quiet nod. People of every age and background, completely different from one another, all headed to the same place for the same reason.

Metallica have been playing for nearly 45 years. Three years before I was born. And their music is woven into moments across my entire life, and clearly across the lives of everyone in that crowd.

That's the thing about music. It becomes part of your identity without you even noticing. It shapes how you see yourself, what you remember, even how you remember people.

Sound familiar? That's exactly what a strong brand does too.

And my slightly unexpected bucket-list realisation? As impressive as a stadium show is, I think I still prefer a small, intimate gig. The kind where you feel every expression and leave feeling like you experienced something personal.

Turns out crossing things off isn't always the gift. Sometimes it's discovering what you actually love when you finally get there.

How about you? Are you a stadium show person or do you prefer a bit more of a social event?

Canva is a genuinely great tool. Most founders just aren't using it like one.

Most founders use it the same way: grab a template, swap the colours, post it, and end up with a feed that's either all over the place or so safe it's forgettable.

Also, let me just say... a strong visual brand isn't just a nice logo, a trendy font, and a photoshoot where you awkwardly cradle a coffee cup near your laptop. It's the visual proof of who you are, what you do, and why people should trust you.

You might be due for a rebrand if:

👾 Your business has grown up, but your visuals are still stuck in their awkward teenage phase
👾 You're attracting the wrong clients, or not getting noticed at all
👾 Your photography, website, and social content look like they belong to three different businesses
👾 You've outgrown that aesthetic you borrowed from Pinterest back in the day
👾 You know your work is great, but your brand isn't saying so

Before you change everything, ask yourself:
What do I want people to think, feel, and do when they see my brand?

That answer should shape your colours, fonts, photography, styling and every visual detail.

Your visual branding isn't just some decoration. It builds recognition, trust and ultimately tells the right people "this is for you" before you've entered the room.

I bring together brand design and photography to help businesses build something cohesive, intentional, and worthy of the work behind it.

No generic business-cosplay required.

Curious what your brand might be saying behind your back? DM me "STATIC" and I'll send over my meeting link for a relaxed brand chemistry chat. Or find the link in my bio. 🫡

Nobody buys a cake they can't see. Same goes for your personal brand.

I shot this series for a baker in SA who was doing something genuinely exciting, launching a pre-packed recipe and ingredients business.

Wholesome products, beautiful concept, and a brand that needed to match the energy of what she was building.

Personal branding works exactly the same way. Your skills might be exceptional, but if the visuals don't communicate that at a glance? People scroll right past the best thing they never tried.

Your brand should make people hungry for what you do, and your visual identity helps you nail that! 🔥

Dearest reader,

It appears a certain Sarah Tompsett has been spotted at Lydiard Park, leaving what can only be described as our very own Bridgerton House.

Once upon a time, this was one of Sarah’s favourite places to walk while still in her corporate chapter. A quiet escape. A place to breathe. A reminder that there was more waiting for her.

And now?

She returns not as the woman stepping away from something, but as the woman stepping fully into her next era.

Her visual brand? Crafted with intention alongside her designer. Her direction? Razor sharp. Her presence? Utterly undeniable. And when the moment came to capture this new chapter through photography, well. The camera did not lie.

But here is what this column really wants you to understand:

A rebrand is not a new colour palette. It is not a fresh set of fonts or a carefully lit headshot.

It is the moment the outside finally catches up with the woman who has been quietly, powerfully transforming on the inside.

Sarah Tompsett did not change. She arrived.

And Society shall not soon forget it. 😁🖤✨📸

Ready to finally build a visual identity that feels like you? I've not always been the best at trusting my gut, but this time, I'm building a business that I am just soooooo excited about. My past businesses were awesome, sure, but this new one is super intentional and focused on helping small business owners like you.

I'm allowing myself to be a little messy at first, because I know it takes time to learn exactly what my clients actually need. But I've already started piloting great new services to help founders, coaches, mentors, speakers, and creatives build cohesive visual identities that feel truly built and not borrowed.

If you're a small business owner ready to stop guessing and start creating an intentional, recognisable visual brand, watch this space. We might be working together really soon!

It’s no longer a secret that I am busy working on a rebrand, and some of you might be interested to find out why. So here it is in a nutshell.

As a Photographer I've journeyed through many phases in my career, starting out as a wedding and corporate photographer, transitioning into a family and newborn niche and now as I grow older, wiser and wittier, Personal Branding is my jam.

I've always put a lot of thought and effort into my personal brand, especially my visual identity. It comes easily to me with a background in Graphic Design and some above average techy type skills. And now that my focus is on Personal Branding photography, I've realised I am sitting on some pretty great interchangeable skills.

So I am expanding my services to not only help founders, couches, mentors and creatives with their personal brand photography, but position myself as a Visual Branding Specialist. Supporting my clients with the full suite of visual assets to get their businesses & brands off the ground or turned around in a way that people notice and like.

So as I said in the video, if you’re considering a rebrand, then hit me up in my DM’s and we can set up a call to bounce ideas around. Even if you’re in the early stages. I can help guide you and support you in a way that you don’t over commit or invest at the start, and if you leave with just a bit of advice, and aren't ready to hire me. That's fine too. I love to meet people, chat about their businesses, and share my unconventional perspective.
