Optimizing my social media platforms is one thing I learned very late in my freelancing journey.

And it changed everything for me.

Recently, a client came into my DM requesting an audit service.

That moment reminded me how powerful a well-structured profile can be.

I once had a conversation with someone who said she wrote her bio to feel more “personal.”

But when I checked her page, it said things like *food addict* and *God-fearing*.

Nothing about what she actually does.

And she was wondering why clients were not reaching out.

Her content had the same issue.

Her posts, videos, and feed didn’t reflect her niche or services at all.

No clarity. No direction. No positioning.

Here is what I’ve learned:

📌 Your bio should clearly state your service
📌 Your feed should reflect your niche and expertise
📌 Your content should position you as a solution, not just a personality

Because clients your page and decide in seconds.

When I optimized my own platforms, I started getting DMs for services like audits and consultations without even pitching.

That’s the power of clarity.

When I started freelancing, I did what most people tell you to do.

Take a course. Learn the skill. Pick a niche. Then start applying.

And honestly… that part is fine.

But there are things I learned the hard way after I actually started working with clients.

Things nobody really emphasizes enough.

So if I had to start all over again, these are the 3 things I would take seriously from day one:

HAVING BOUNDARIES WITH CLIENTS
This is the one that changed everything for me.

Most beginners think getting the client is the hardest part.
So when they finally get one, they accept everything.

Late replies. Extra work. Unclear expectations. Random requests outside working hours. I did that too.

But here’s what I would do differently:

Before signing anything, I would clearly state my working boundaries.
📌 working hours
📌 communication time
📌 revision limits
📌 scope of work

Boundaries don’t push clients away.
They actually build respect.

BUILDING A PORTFOLIO BEFORE APPLYING FOR JOBS

Start building proof of work before I even get paid.

If you’re a beginner VA:
📌 take internships (even unpaid ones)
📌 use mock projects from courses
📌 screenshot your practice work
📌 document everything you do

Because later, that portfolio is what speaks for you when you’re not in the room.

BUILDING A PERSONAL BRAND EARLY
This one took me the longest to understand.

Skills alone are not enough.

You need visibility.
You need a place where people can find you without you chasing them.

And funny enough…
Most people are still waiting to feel “ready” before they start all this. That used to be me too.

If you’re trying to land your first virtual assistant client but you don’t have a portfolio yet, this is one of the biggest things holding you back.

Because in today’s online space, no client is just going to “trust your CV.” They want proof. They want to 'see' what you can do.

A strong VA portfolio does 3 important things:
📍It builds trust.
📍It validates your skills.
And it helps you stand out in a very crowded space.

Your portfolio is your proof of work.

This is where you show things like:
📌Email management samples
📌Calendar organization systems
📌Travel itinerary planning
📌Meeting notes & reports
📌SOPs you’ve created
📌Newsletters or CRM workflows
Even screenshots or simple mock examples can make a huge difference.

Most virtual assistants don’t have this, which is exactly why having one instantly puts you ahead.

A good VA portfolio should include:
✅Your name + role (who you are and what you do)
✅Your services (what you actually offer)

✅Your skills (tools + strengths)

I’m not just wishing, I’m choosing structure, consistency, and intentional growth.
