Security Tips for the Week

safety during the raining season

during raining seasons in Ghana, there is always a news item on how people die trying to get home during or after a heavy down pour. this have been the norm over the years, most of the death is due to negligence and others ignorance on what to do, during and after a heavy rain. this is why this week's security tips have been dedicated to the this subject.

During rain or flood

• Do not walk through moving water. As little as 6 inches (15 centimeters) of moving water can make you fall.

• If you have to walk in water, wherever possible, walk where the water is not moving. Use a stick to check the firmness of the ground in front of you.

• Do not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.

• Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.

After a Flood

• Listen for news reports to learn whether the community's water supply is safe to drink.

• Avoid floodwaters; water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines.

• Avoid moving water.

• Be aware of areas where floodwaters have receded. Roads may have weakened and could collapse under the weight of a car.

• Stay away from downed power lines, and report them to the power company.

• Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

• Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.

• Service damaged septic tanks, cesspools, pits, and leaching systems as soon as possible. Damaged sewage systems are serious health hazards.

• Clean and disinfect everything that got wet. Mud left from floodwater can contain sewage and chemicals.

Security Tips for the Day
1. Install smoke detectors, check them regularly, and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2. Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords.

3. Keep fire extinguishers handy and know how to use them.

4. Establish a safety exit, ensure all family members know and understand it, practice with drills, and ensure it’s never blocked.

5. Never block or pile things on heaters or near heat-exuding appliances; give these a wide berth, plenty of breathing room, and make sure they don’t get overheated.

6. Ensure that all materials are fire-resistant if you’re renovating or just fixing up something around the house.

7. Never leave any type of fire or hot appliance unattended.

8. Remove dry vegetation around your home, especially during the dry seasons.

9. Cover the fireplace with a stable and large metal fire frame.

SECURITY TIP FOR THE DAY:

Burglar-proof your glass patio doors by setting a pipe or metal bar in the middle bottom track of the door slide. The pipe should be the same length as the track. Optional home security equipment, such as a glass break sensor can also be used to detect when a glass door or window is shattered and alert you of a break-in

SECURITY TIP FOR THE DAY:

Install drapes or blinds on all lower level windows
and doors to obscure the visibility of expensive
items such as computers, stereos and televisions.

Avoid a room with a view. A view from the outside, that is.

Stand outside your house and take notice of what you can see through the windows.

Is your 62-inch television in plain sight from the sidewalk? Can you see your computer or other valuable electronics from the doorway?

If you can see them, so can thieves. If possible, move valuables out of sight of the street. If you can't, then make sure the windows are always covered.
