Autism Awareness Screening 2026: Advancing Early Identification and Inclusive Support.

Early identification remains a cornerstone of effective intervention in autism spectrum conditions. In line with this, the National Assessment and Resource Centre (NARC), in collaboration with Mulan Neurodiversity School (MNS), is organizing Autism Awareness Screening Programme”scheduled for Tuesday, 21st April 2026 at 9:00 AM, at the NARC premises in Achimota.

This initiative is designed to bridge the gap between awareness and actionable support by providing structured screening services for children who may exhibit developmental differences. The programme brings together multidisciplinary professionals including special educators, psychologists, and allied health practitioners to conduct evidence-informed screening procedures aimed at early detection.

Beyond screening, the event serves as a critical platform for public education and stakeholder engagement. Parents, caregivers, and educators will gain practical insights into early signs of autism, developmental red flags, and appropriate referral pathways. This aligns with best practices in special education, where early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes through timely intervention and individualized support planning.

The collaboration between NARC and MNS reflects a shared commitment to inclusive education and neurodiversity advocacy. By situating the programme within a national resource framework, the initiative also strengthens institutional capacity for ongoing assessment, data collection, and service coordination in Ghana’s special education landscape.

Participants can expect:

* Professional developmental screenings
* Guidance on next steps following screening outcomes
* Access to resource networks and intervention services
* Increased awareness of inclusive practices in education and care

Ultimately, this programme is not merely an event but a strategic intervention—aimed at fostering early support systems, informed communities, and inclusive learning environments for children with autism.

Ever had a classmate called 'dumb' in school?

Many kids unfairly labeled that way might've had dyslexia. They struggle with reading but excel at problem-solving, creativity, sports, storytelling, and hands-on skills.

Let's all play a role in helping such children in our societies rather than demeaning them.

By doing so, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

💚 ILLEGAL MINING (GALAMSEY) AND DISABILITY: A HIDDEN CRISIS IN GHANA

Awareness and Advocacy for Environmental and Disability Justice

🪙 Ghana’s struggle with illegal small-scale mining popularly known as galamsey goes far beyond environmental destruction. Beneath the visible scars on our lands and rivers lies a silent crisis that affects the health, dignity, and abilities of countless Ghanaians.

💧 THE CHEMICAL TRAP
Illegal mining often involves the uncontrolled use of mercury, cyanide, lead, and arsenic to extract gold. These toxic substances seep into rivers, soil, and farmlands, poisoning communities that depend on them for drinking water, fishing, and farming (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2019). Exposure to Mercury particularly is dangerous for developing brains. It can cause permanent neurological damage, cognitive impairment, and motor disabilities in children (World Health Organization [WHO], 2017).

👶 CHILDREN AND THE NEXT GENERATION
Children living near galamsey sites are the most vulnerable ones. Exposure to toxic chemicals during pregnancy or early childhood is linked to birth defects, developmental delays, hearing and vision impairments, and learning disabilities (WHO, 2017; UNEP, 2019). Reports from affected communities in Ghana also document widespread child labour in mining sites, high rates of injury, and routine exposure to toxic dust and mercury vapour (Human Rights Watch, 2017; BusinessGhana, 2023).

🧠 FROM POLLUTION TO DISABILITY

Long-term chemical exposure and unsafe mine conditions can lead to:

🔰Neurological and developmental disabilities (learning difficulties, motor impairments) (WHO, 2017).

🔰Physical disabilities from injuries (collapses, accidents) or chronic organ damage (lead/mercury poisoning) (BMC Public Health, 2019).

🔰Psychosocial disabilities: depression, anxiety, and trauma driven by loss of livelihood, displacement, and social disruption (UNEP, 2019).

🌍 THE DISABILITY–ENVIRONMENT CONNECTION
When our environment is destroyed, it’s not just the ecosystem that suffers, human health and ability does suffers too. In Ghana, galamsey has been declared a national public health concern in local reporting, with polluted waterways, reduced fish stocks, and contaminated farmlands undermining nutrition and health (The Ghana Report, 2024). These conditions increase the risk of long-term disability and reduce survivors’ ability to access education and work, deepening cycles of exclusion (Ghana Health Service, 2022).

💪 A CALL FOR INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION
The fight against galamsey is not political , it’s a fight for life, inclusion , and justice.

To reduce the toll of disability linked to illegal mining, we must:

1. Strengthen public education on health effects and safe mining practices (WHO, 2017; UNEP, 2019).

2. Support alternative livelihoods and economic opportunities for families so they are not forced into hazardous mining (Human Rights Watch, 2017).

3. Ensure access to healthcare, screening, and rehabilitation for persons harmed by toxic exposure or injury (Ghana Health Service, 2022).

4. Involve affected communities, including persons with disabilities in monitoring, remediation, and local decision-making (UNEP, 2019).

🕊️ ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IS DISABILITY PREVENTION.

Every river we save, every child we protect, and every miner we educate helps reduce future disability and suffering.

💚 Let’s rise together for our people, our planet, and our shared future.

Barriers to intelligence, talents, and potential often lie in the way we support and nurture individuals with unique gifts.

As teachers, parents, and members of society, we play a crucial role in unlocking the potential of children with learning difficulties.

Let's work together to create an inclusive environment that empowers them to thrive, rather than holding them back.

Education is for all - let's break down barriers, not build them.

💚 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY – OCTOBER 10

🧠 “ _Mental health is a universal human right.”_

Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, act, and relate to others. Good mental health is essential at every stage of life.

🌍 GLOBAL CONTEXT & KEY FACTS
Over 1 billion people globally live with a mental health condition (WHO).

Many mental health conditions are treatable. Affordable and effective strategies exist.

However, there is a wide treatment gap, many people who need help do not receive it.

According to Ipsos, 62% of people in 31 countries reported feeling stressed to the point that it impacted their daily life at least once in the past year.

🇬🇭 MENTAL HEALTH IN GHANA
It is estimated that 13% of Ghanaians suffer from a mental disorder (3% severe; 10% moderate to mild) (WHO, 2007).

Ghana has over 2.3 million people living with mental health conditions, but only about 2% of them receive psychiatric care.

The mental health system in Ghana faces challenges such as limited infrastructure, human resource constraints, and integration into primary health care is weak.

📌The WHO’s Special Initiative for Mental Health in Ghana aims to extend mental health services to 5.2 million more Ghanaians.

⚠️ WARNING SIGNS & COMMON ISSUES
_Signs that someone may be struggling include:_
📍Persistent sadness or low mood.
📍Loss of interest or pleasure in activities.
📍Changes in appetite or sleep.
📍Irritability, agitation, or withdrawal.
📍Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.

COMMON CONDITIONS: depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, substance use disorders, and more.

✨ LET’S ACT TODAY

✅ Speak openly: break the silence and reduce stigma.

✅ Encourage friends or family to seek professional help when needed.

✅ Support mental health policies and services in your community.

✅ Practice self-care: rest, connect, talk, move, breathe.

📢 _Mental health is not a luxury, it’s a human right._

💼 OCTOBER, DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH.

💭 “Inclusion works when opportunities are equal.”

People with disabilities are skilled, creative, and capable, yet many are still denied job opportunities simply because of stigma and inaccessibility.

According to the ILO (2023), persons with disabilities experience double the unemployment rate of those without disabilities worldwide. In Ghana, many qualified persons with disabilities are left out of decent work, not because they lack ability but because workplaces lack accessibility and understanding.

LET’S CHANGE THAT!
✅ Employers: Create inclusive recruitment policies and accessible workspaces.

✅ Government: Strengthen disability employment laws and enforcement.

✅ Society: Recognise ability beyond limitation.

✅ You: Be the voice that opens doors, not closes them.

📢 Inclusion isn’t charity, it’s good business, and it’s justice.

💚 WORLD CEREBRAL PALSY DAY – OCTOBER 6

💭 _“Millions of reasons to celebrate. One shared vision: inclusion for all.”_

Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that affects movement, muscle tone, and posture due to damage to the developing brain. This can occur before, during, or soon after birth, often linked to oxygen deprivation, infections, premature birth, or brain injury (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).

🌍 GLOBAL REALITY:

🔰 CP is the most common motor disability in childhood (Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation [CPARF], 2024).

🔰 About 17 million people worldwide live with CP (World Cerebral Palsy Day Organization, 2024).

🔰 Around 350 million family members, caregivers, and supporters are directly affected (CPARF, 2024).

🔰 Every year, nearly 1 in every 500 babies is diagnosed with CP (WHO, 2023).

🔰 In low- and middle-income countries, like Ghana, limited healthcare access increases risks and delays early detection (WHO, 2023).

🇬🇭 IN GHANA:

🔰 It’s estimated that 1 in every 300 births results in a child with CP (Cerebral Palsy Africa, 2023).

🔰 Over 20,000 children are currently living with CP across the country (Ghana Health Service [GHS], 2023).

🔰 Many face barriers in education, mobility, and social acceptance due to stigma and limited rehabilitation services (Centre for Disability Studies, University of Ghana, 2022).

🧠 TYPES OF CP:

1. Spastic CP: stiff or tight muscles and difficulty in movement (most common type).

2. Dyskinetic CP: involuntary, jerky, or twisting movements.

3. Ataxic CP: challenges with balance and coordination.

4. Mixed CP: a combination of symptoms from the above types.

👶 COMMON SIGNS (IN CHILDREN):
📍Delayed milestones (sitting, crawling, walking)
📍Abnormal muscle tone: too stiff or too floppy
📍Trouble with balance, coordination, or speech
📍Difficulty using limbs equally

💚 INCLUSION AND RIGHTS:
People with CP deserve equal opportunities to education, healthcare, employment, and participation, not pity or exclusion. Their abilities go far beyond their disability (World Cerebral Palsy Day Organization, 2024).

LET’S TAKE ACTION TODAY:
✅ Promote inclusive education and accessibility.

✅ Support parents, caregivers, and advocacy organizations.

✅ Speak out against and discrimination.

✅ Celebrate the strength and achievements of persons with CP.

📢 Inclusion is not charity, it’s equality.
