You may not be a small business owner...yet
But...
Imagine you are a small business owner, sitting in a cozy shared workspace or even in your cool home office. You've been running a social ad to boost sales for the past 7 days. So here you are, behind your PC, tracking and analysing your ad performance and realising high engagement with very little sales.
This means, you are not meeting your ad objective/goal. And now, after 7 days you are starting to get frustrated.
Now stop imagining and listen to me...
As an individual who uses social media mainly for entertainment, here is how you may be contributing to a small business owner's frustration with social ads.
But first, I want you to understand this 👇
In the age of digital marketing, small businesses often rely on social media and online ads to reach their target audience. This is because it is relatively cheaper with high returns when done RIGHT.
However, mindless engagement with these ads can have unintended negative consequences for both consumers and businesses.
For the small business, here is what is happening:
📌Misleading Metrics: When you engage with ads without genuine interest, it skews the metrics that small businesses rely on to measure success. High engagement rates may lead to false confidence, prompting businesses to allocate resources inefficiently.
📌Dilution of Ad Value/Quality: Engaging with ads mindlessly can dilute the quality of an ad. When an ad is often clicked and left alone, it sends a message to the algorithm that it is an ineffective ad. Thereby reducing it's effectiveness while increasing cost.
📌Resource Misallocation: Small businesses often operate with limited budgets. If they invest in ads that receive engagement for the wrong reasons, they may waste money on ineffective campaigns instead of focusing on strategies that yield real results.
For you the social media user, here's what will happen:
📌Customer Confusion: Mindless engagement can lead to mixed signals about what you want. If a business receives feedback that is driven more by impulse than genuine interest, it may misinterpret trends and alter its offerings in unproductive ways. Causing you to be frustrated for not getting what you want.
📌Frustration With Unwanted ads: When you engage with ads without intention, you may eventually feel frustrated by irrelevant products or services ads. Facebook, or Instagram will continue to show yooou similar ads for clicking on one you weren't interested in.
THE WAY FORWARD
While engaging with ads may seem harmless, mindless interactions can have significant repercussions for small businesses. And YOU!
It’s essential for both you and businesses to approach advertising thoughtfully, ensuring that engagement reflects genuine interest and value. By doing so, we can foster a more authentic marketplace that benefits everyone involved. Including YOU!
So here's what you should do today and always, if you are not interested PLEASE LEAVE THAT AD ALONE.
