Today, we honour the journey of those who came before usโthe Indian ancestors who arrived on May 5, 1838, aboard the Whitby and the Hesperus, and the Portuguese, Chinese, and others who followed. Together with the freed African slaves and our Indigenous Amerindian people, they forged the foundations of modern Guyana.
Their resilience built more than homes and fieldsโthey built a nation. As we reflect on their sacrifice, let us find the courage to advance their legacy. May we commit ourselves to the ideals of โOne People, One Nation, One Destiny,โ by championing economic opportunity and social justice for all.
